Hey everyone.  Here's a question.  After two years of being told that my husband is bipolar, we're now learning that he actually has IED.  Explosive rage is his probelm.  He never did fit the bipolar descriptions.  The medicines are very similar anyway.
1.  Is anyone else trying to stay married to someone with IED?
2.  Has anyone reading this successfully overcome the excessive rage and violence?  Do you know of anyone who is now coping with this?
3.  What really helps with this disorder?
4.  How large a role does medicine play versus counseling?  He has been counseled extensively and has been to anger management classes.  He even went into a rage right after anger mngt class...........
Thanks.  AGentry

I have not heard of that disorder until you mentioned it.  I went and read up about it on some websites, and was able to get some info.  From what I read, mood stabilizers and anticonvulsive drugs such as gabapentin, lithium, carbamazepine, and divalproex can be used.  Also, SRIs such as fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, and sertraline can also be used to control the symptoms.  I think that cognitive behavioral therapy is just as needed as meds.  I am sorry I can't be of more help, below are some of the sites I visited.

I had never heard of IED either, so I read Olivia's links. (Thanks O!) My question is whether you're in any danger. Do his outbursts turn into violence towards you?

Ask me about my Bipolar Disorder!
