Hi! I'm new here and came here for support on how to help my brother. My brother tried to end his life for the 3rd time last month. He is 32. He tried this when he was 18, 21 and now 32. He was finally diagnosed with BP. ( He was found in a woods by a stranger.... who later could not be found... a true Angel!) He was placed in a mental hospitla for 2 weeks, no he is out. On Abilify ( which seems to be helping some) he sees his therapist once a week. He just had surgery Monday to repair his wrists. He is in a lot of pain and sad that he has no job. I gave him $1,000 to help with his bills, but that only goes so far. What financial suport ( if any) can I help him apply for? Any advice would be great. He will be disabled to work for about 3 months.

Hi Smileygirls:

Welcome to the board. I truly hope we can offer you the kind of support you're looking for here.

Your poor brother must be suffering, and you must be very worried. I know very little about applying for disability benefits or Social Security benefits so I'm afraid my only advice to you is to call an accountant or financial planner if you know one, who can give you some expert advice. If your brother had a job, he might have had disability insurance, and therefore, he might be eligible.

Anyone else on the board done this before?

Hi Smileygirls,

Welcome to HW, ouch, it seems like he has been going through a tough time.  Below are some links that might be helpful, they are for SSI/SSDI.  It includes the qualification he needs to meet to get benefits.

Is he in the US? If so he might qualify for legal aid in his state. If you just google "Legal Aid and put his state in" then you will have the numbers.
