Well the good news is that we know why my thyroid is enlarged and has nodules...I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Seems it runs in my family, and the blood test confirmed it. Other good news is that it is totally treatable with syntrhoid type medication, and it is cheap too.

I am also pleased to finally know why I have had a large thyroid at least since I was 18.

What annoys me is that for 20+ years, doctors have told me I have a large thyroid...we do blood tests every few years and it is always normal. Yet no one asked for further testing to determine why...or to express concern at the growth. I saw an endocrinologist on Monday who immediately put me on meds, and has ordered a needle biopsy. Yea, a needle in my neck. Just what I wanted.

I am hopeful that the tx will help all that ails me....sleeping problems and the post-Tamoxifen weight gain that has snuck up on me....those can also be related to thyroid disorders. Or bad diet...we'll see...

Heading to Texas this weekend and looking forward to some great Mexican food and visiting with a college friend that I have not seen for about 10+ years...

Have a wonderful time, Lori. Sounds like a great trip.

And good luck with the thyroid meds. I had an overactive thyroid in my late 20s, got it under control, got pregnant and had a baby. Thyriod stabalized for many years, then it slowed down and gets slower as the years pass. Can't promise meds will help with the weight. Hasn't for me. Hugs, Lauri (dxed 04/11/1996)

I will have to look up Hashimoto disease. I have no idea what it is, but I have heard so many people say they are having thyroid problems. Take care, hope the meds do a great job. Have fun in Houston, wave as you fly over. Also have a safe trip, hope you don't have to stop at DFW airport, it has been jammed for over a week with airplane inspection cancellations. Hugs MK

Hi Lori,
This is a name from the past but I had to actually take the time to reply when I saw your post about thyroid problems.  I, too, was diagnosed with Hashimoto's about 3 years ago.  My onc had been noting an enlarged thyroid, went to have it ultrasound 3 separate times and each time they kept saying that it had nodules but let's watch it.  After the 3rd time, my onc sent me to an endocrinologist who did multiple test and made the dx.  He explained to me that my thyroid was slowly dying off and it could happen quickly or take a long time.  My thyroid levels were within normal ranges so they have not put me on meds so far.  I go once a year for check-up and ultrasound with endo doc.  I had had lots of weight gain from tamoxifen and when I got the Hashimoto's dx I was thrilled that maybe this was more the cause of weight gain...turned out not to be so!  More has to do with what I was eating and age!  Got sick of it this past January, started Weight Watchers and have lost 12 pounds and am almost at my goal weight.
I am starting to wonder if there is not some connection with our bc treatment that leads to Hashi's....
Hope all else is well.

Christi! Wow, a name from the past, so glad to see you! I'm so glad to see you, been thinking about you lots!
Most interesting...
I wondered about the chemo link, but in my case there appears to be a family hx of it, and what I read indicates that there is often a genetic link. I also look back at my school pictures back to junior high and have the same large thyroid visible back then....I think I've had it for years and years. My thyroid levels are also normal....I've had several blood tests over the years and always normal...which annoys me that no doc ever took it further to figure out why my thyroid was large.
The u/s was done, found 2 nodules. Radioactive scan said benign. My doc wanted me to just come back in 4 months for repeat blood but I asked to see an endo when I learned of my family hx....the endocrinologist started me immediately on meds....said that it would help control the growth of the thyroid and the nodules, and the blood test confirmed Hashimoto's. I've read that it is sometimes used to treat Hashi's. Endo also wants to do a FNA on the nodule, just to be sure....
Christi, I immediately hoped that my thyroid was to blame for the Tamox weight gain not coming off, and the post-Tamoxifen gain....also hoping it is to blame for my poor sleep. Plus the pill is smaller than Tamoxifen, good thing, as I'll be on it for life!
Christi, feel free to email me, do you still have my addy?
Glad you popped in to share! Hope you are well!
