Radioactive Iodine tx tomorrow...

I'll be nuclear!

Tomorrow I get to take a secret special pill of 100 microcuries, which by this hospital standards, means at least 1 night inpatient in a special isolation room on the cancer floor. Everything will be covered with plastic or paper I hear. Once I come out, I will not be a danger to other but will have to take some saftey precautions for a few days. I am most excited to get back on thyroid meds (2 weeks without Cytomel, which is the shorter half life version of synthroid) and 2 weeks of a low iodine diet. I am looking forward to resuming a normal diet and normal thyroid levels!

I will be given a special travel card too, in case I am stopped at the border if I try to escape the country, so they do not think I am carrying an atomic bomb. Gotta love it, right?

Maybe we should just change your name to "Nuke." An old friend of ours would have said, "Some people will do anything to get out of going to work." Chin up, kiddo, and let that gland glow!

Bev, I know, right? I told my boss that's what it has come to around here...needing surgery to take a vacation! Admittely, the surgery sick time was the first since chemo in 2000, so I think I proved my point. :)

Gee I am glad to hear they offer you a card so you can escape across the border! LOL I will be anxious to hear if you glow in the dark! Take care and follow doctor's orders. I'm glad you get to use a few sick days. If you haven't had any since 2000 you deserve every one of them. Hugs MK

Hey Lori...glad you are getting this taken care of now, so you will be feeling great in time for the Springsteen concert. I am so jealous !! I sure would love to be at that concert. So glad you will be staying at a REAL hotel in St. Louis...LOL.

Please know I care so much about you and that you are in my thoughts and prayers all the time....please post as soon as you are able..!!

I'm home! Got the word by 8:30 this morning. Yea! The guy came to take measurements, with the key one being 1 meter from my neck, at 7mmr or less. First one was 8.3. Bummer. He sends me in to pee, just in case that helps, and voila! It went down to 6.7, just by emptying my bladder. The key is drink, drink, drink!
The room experience was a thousand times better than after surgery. I had a quiet room far from the nurse's station, door shut, own thermostat and even a fridge. I brought in some of my own bottled water and fruit, and drank like a fish yesterday. I was able to sleep till about 5:45 am, another improvement from surgery.

A few precautions for a while, just can't have prolonged contact with others. I can go shopping, out to eat, etc, jut can't sit too close to anyone especially PG woman or young kids or I could pose risk to their thyroid. Not too terrible.

Best part is I am back on a regular diet, forget the low iodine diet, and can start thyroid meds on Sunday. Back for a body scan on Thursday and then I can reclaim my life (until the next scan in 6 months).

All a big hassle, but nothing compared to the warrior badge of being a BC survivor!

OMG a hospital room with a fridge!!!! I never heard of such a thing, but what an improvement. I could store all the green jello they bring just to make a point!!! LOL Just kidding of course. But it would be great to have your own supply of jello in the right colors. Next we need a micro to heat food brought from outside.

It sounds like your experience was much better than anticipated. That's good! Now you can get on with living normally again. How is Tavish taking it all?

Funny thing happened here talking about dogs. I ordered some rawhide bones from Amazon. I had ordered some before in the small size and Jimmy goes through them one a day. So I bought medium this time. They came last night. Eight inches long, great big knots on the end and the middle barely fits his little mouth. But there he goes running around carrying them. They are like the dumbell toys. He spent all night chewing on the one and barely made a dent. I got back on the computer and ordered the small ones again. How in the world can they call bones medium when it would take a German Shepherd's mouth to fit them?

Sam, hi! I will not be happy if I have to do this again! I feel like I had a dose of chemo AC again...I've been queasy with sensitivity to food and my taste buds are GONE! And I am tired like you wouldn't believe. I just re-started the levoxyl yesterday and can't wait to get out of hypo-heII. My eyes are puffy, itchy and tearing and my sleep is lousy.

Ah, nostalgia! Not! I am hoping my taste buds come back SOON and that my thyroid level gets back in shape fast. I have to go for the whole body scan on Thursday, then I think I can put this behind me for now.

You had RAI twice or were you referring to rads for BC too?

Glad you are home and hope you get back to normal fast.  Oh, I just noticed - there are new emoticons on here!  LOL  Anyway, take care and keep us posted.

I had the radioactive iodine twice. Once last year after my surgery and then again this year because my thyrogen test came back with a level of 9.1.

I had 150 mcg each time. I felt a lot worse this last time and I looked all puffy and stuff. I didn't feel good for over a week. All I can hope is that it killed off all the remaining stuff. When I had the scan done, it showed uptake in my ovary for the second time! Very odd!

What is difficult is that normal thyroid tissue and cancerous stuff gives off the same thing so they don't really know which.

Either way, it had better be done!!

Good luck! You will feel  lots better once the thyroid meds kick in!
