Hello everyone. I am 53 and have a lump in my right breast--had mammo and ultrasound. Scheduled for biopsy on Wednesday. The Dr that read the ultrasound said I have a mass in right breast and need biopsy. Do older women such as myself with ongoing hot flases and such have benign masses such as fibroadenomas, etc.? I have been on an emotional roller coaster these days. The closer the time comes, the less I can sleep or even think clearly.

Please let me know any information you may have--it will be much appreciated. I really need to pull myself together and most of the time I am ok---but I do have some moments that I am not very proud of.

OK Calm down!!! My favorite advice is not to worry until you know you have something to worry about. There are all kinds of scenarios I can suggest. There is always a chance that the lump is benign, breasts change a lot during menopause, they soften so the lump could have been there from an old injury? It could very well be an early cancer that would require only a lumpectomy and some radiation with no further treatment ever needed. My aunt is an example of this, she had the lumpectomy about 25 years ago and is now 81 and doing just fine. I probably could have had the same but I opted for a mastectomy and have had no further cancer problems -- I was 58 then and am now 70. Then there is a chance that it could be cancer with more treatment needed, but the pathology report will tell that. I feel like the more aggressive cancers are unusual after 50, altho there are exceptions. So please just relax and wait until you know more. You will most likely have less to deal with than you are imagining. Hugs, MK
