New member here, hopefully someone out there still responds since the last post has been a few months... A few weeks back my right breast started hurting (felt kind of like my toddler had stepped on my breast but she hadn't) so I did a self exam only to find a lump. I went in for a manual exam and was referred to another location that does digital mammography, which I completed last Wed (May 7th), today I received a call from my original doctor stating she had received her copy of the results and the 2nd doctor wants to "keep an eye on it so go back for another digital mammography in 6 months" she then added (and I quote word for word) "and we are going to have to need you to go see a surgeon. Do you have a surgeon in mind? Can I make you an appointment with one we use?".... I'm obviously worried about what's going on here when she jumbles her words using words like "have to" making it sound very important non-negotiable but then saying "need" like it's a preference but not necessary. (or maybe I'm just over thinking that out of terror)... Either way since I had a digital mammogram where they took 6-8 pictures of the one breast should I be over concerned about the request to see a surgeon or is that just protocol? I have a family history of breast cancer so it only adds to the panic... any help is greatly appreciated.

It must be the day - Hi angel bunnies, I'm SmithMom - a new member, got my first call back from my first mammogram today, while working from home taking care of my high school senior who is recovering from a tonsillectomy done last week and is graduating in less than a month. I just had the mammogram last week and am scheduled for further imaging on Friday. I'm glad I found this forum - it's comforting to see most turn out ok, but I'm more than a little concerned it took 2 months to get scheduled for the darn thing and only 4 days for further imaging? I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth, just having a rough week I guess. I don't believe there are enough middle fingers in the world for this Monday!

Hello friends. I have been lurking this chat board for months now, mostly the Anxiety forum and have found it to be a great help. I thank you for that.

I too went for essentially a first mammogram back on April 23 2014.

I also get the dreaded letter to "come back for more tests - Ultrasound - both breasts" on May 2nd.

I googled and the stats are soooo encouraging:

10% get called back after a first mammo, (often because there is nothing to compare it too, so they want to be sure).

90% are FINE after the second check.

10% of those need biopsies.

Of those, 80% are benign.

OK, so the stats SOUND good, but, worry worry me, I think:

Then how come so many women get breast cancer???

I had a health scare last July, thought I was having a heart attack, turned out to be stress. I was given xanax which for me is a TRUE lifesaver as the anxiety attacks persisted after that (and I have had anxiety and depression my whole life).

OK, so I go back yesterday for the ultrasound (they were able to move me up from May 29th!) and I tried to be calm and joke a little, but the gal doing the exam was "friendly but oh-so professional" and for some reason, I just laid there feeling worse and worse!! I literally had to fight back the tears in fear,

She concentrated on one side of my right breast over and over, then did the other side for comparison I guess. Again, it concerned me and she wasn't going to give me any reassurance AT ALL (I guess she can't) but didn't make me feel better either.

They tell me I may or may not get the results but my Doctor will. My Doc is good but her staff sucks big time. They won't call me when the results come in or tell the Doctor, I will have to wait a week or more, see if I get something in the mail, and be calling my Docs office having to deal with those surly gals. I'll have to call every day I guess, THEN make an appointment. Why can't Doc just call me as soon as results come in? Isn't that her job???

I'm thinking of changing Docs but this is in process now, so I have to deal with it. Changing Doctors might delay results going from one place to another.

Ugh!!!!

One nice gal at radiology TOLD me to make an appt with my Doc when I expressed concern over when and how I how I get mt results so she can go over my results regardless. I'm glad she said something because I'm not really being told what the deal is.

I wish like some of you they could have told me at the same time what my results were.

Plus this is a new Doc, new insurance for me, and while she gave me the xanax I needed, I'm not sure she will renew them quite as soon as I'll need, since I have been under a LOT of stress over this and other things.

Apologies for the long post, it feels good to share this as I have no family to share it with, and my few friends well, they can only give me so much sympathy.

I'd like to think all will be well, but heath anxiety is a real problem for me. I will update and keep everyone else in my thoughts.

Thank you for allowing me to share.

xo

My Anxiety Life: I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as well.

I don't understand todays health care providers AT ALL they never seem to want to follow-up with you on important matters but then get upset if you make an appointment to follow-up on something they should have contacted you for in the first place. Their logic, "a sick person could have used that appointment", that's IF you can even manage to get an appointment at all. Then when/if you do they don't put any work into helping you at all, that or you end up getting stuck with emergency room bills when a doctor wont see you in a timely manner and you go to the er only to have insurance deem it "non-emergency" and refuse to pay.

Point and case for me personally: I was having massive headaches, involuntary muscle twitching/spasms, and sharp electrifying sensations going down my face/legs. The doctor said "migraines" and handed me a script for seizure medication saying that it will help with the headaches. He never did any type of brain scans to make sure there wasn't anything serious or anything. Flash forward a month in to the medication the electric impulses, muscle twitching/spasms, and now(at the time) my arms and legs shake violently when I lay down. If those weren't bad enough I was riding down the road one day and next thing I know I wake up confused and everything around me is a blur, my husband explains that I just fell over on him and was twitching, I had a seizure for the first time in my entire life (and the last thank God)! Needless to say I stopped that medication and now am much better... Then came the recent events: I called my doctor at the end of March with a nasty case of food poison, and they said the earliest appointment was May 13th, I explained I had food poison and couldn't keep anything down for 10 days straight and she said "oh well I guess that wont work, I tell you what give me your number and I will call you if an appointment comes up." needless to say that day never came.

So then came the day I found the lump: first thought in my head, aside from please don't let it be cancer, was what am I suppose to do now? My doctor has a waiting list of months out, but I've always heard come in IMMEDITELY if you find a lump and have a family history. Then there is the voice in the back of my mind screaming "he gave you medication for seizures that caused a seizure, when you have no history of seizures!" So what do I do? Where do I go?... I called around to every facility that is known for conducting exams only to be told "you need a referral", "sorry we aren't taking new patents", or "we can get you in x amount of months from now". In the end I went to the health department which has now became an adventure of itself. Now the "real" facilities look at me like I'm some criminal or low-life druggie because I went to the health department instead of " a real doctor".(Note: I don't think that people who go to the health department have to be either of those things, it seems to be society's way of thinking now days though, or at least in my area it is) I actually had someone looking at the referral asking me who is the "real doctor", not the one that wrote the referral from the health department, but a "real" doctor.. I must have looked at her like she was insane or something because she responded with a look of shock and the quickly said "I mean who is your normal physician". confused Seriously, you have a referral in your hand with a doctors signature stating there is a lump, but they ask you who's the real doctor. confused Does that mean the men and women who work for the health departments trying to help low income families or those in need aren't considered real doctors any more just because they work essentially "for free" because they get government funding instead of health insurance from a patent? nono

I think common sense has evaded so many people today! It's sad that you can't get help when needed but if can manage to find some where willing to help your frowned upon because it's the less desired facility.

I think I have droned on enough, and I apologize for the rant, it's just nice to be able to vent it all out. I know how it feels not wanting to bother your loved ones with your stresses, it seems like they can only be so sympathetic before you wonder if they are getting feed up with hearing your problems.. At least that's how I feel... Also I try not to bother my husband because he has enough on his plate being the sole provider in our home and still living with the affects of his former career (US Army, combat veteran).

I understand you, angelbunnies69.

I'll skip my looooong story, but I despise going to Doctors and such after caring for my aged parents for 20 years and seeing all the BS they had to go through. AND they had good insurance.

My Dad was a WWll Vet, and the VA was worse than the local welfare hospital. Just hate these places and the insensitive people who work there.

They are cold, insensitive, rude, uncaring, (with A FEW exceptions) and this is why I hate hate hate going to get these tests now that I have insurance. Something told me, I'd have problems on top of my health anxiety. And ta-da!! I'm the lucky 10% that got called back for more breast exam tests. Sooo freakin typical..... Ugh...

Just sucks having these people hold the power over us when it comes to our health. I hate it.

So I went last week for my yearly mammogram and thought everything was fine but the next day I get the dreaded call.  We need to do additional pictures on your left breast. I felt sick. I had never had a call back before but had heard they are common.  At this point there was no rationalizing with me.  I had myself 20 feet under.  This is the way at times my OCD mind works.  I literally kept touching my left breast cause I thought I found the spot.  Literally my skin was so red and raw from poking.  This is what I did to myself.  Funny only went it comes to my breasts do I freak out.  Maybe cause Pink is everywhere as it should be but the reality is the chances of it being breast cancer are quite slim. So I went back and the technician said here let me show you the spot where  were looking at as we think it is nothing probably just some breast tissue/skin that was folded over.  Sure enough they took about five pics and turned out to be nothing and sent me on my way.  So I know I can say it a million times but dont worry.  What our mind can do to us is crazy~~ So next call back I get in the future will be a much less blow~~

I am a new member. I love these support groups - I feel like I have company out there. I don't wish anxiety on anyone, but it is reassuring to know I'm not alone. My mammogram is scheduled for the day after tomorrow. I start worrying at least a month prior. It was on my mind the entire time I was on vacation out West two weeks ago. As the time nears I get more and more anxious. I had a call back last year, but all was well. I have had a biopsy and another call back years ago (I'm 60). I know as I age, my odds increase. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get through this and remain sane? I hate being such a wimp. It's not the process at all, it's the anxiety that is ruining my life as it approaches.

Just got a call back today. I am 51 and have had clean mammograms for 14years. I am in perimenopause and this year has been up and down with my cycles. Could this play into things on the mammogram? They were vague saying they wanted another look on the left side with a possible ultrasound. Of course I am a wreck!!

Went for a yearly mammogram (2nd one/41yrs old) 2weeks ago and the next day got a call back saying "they needed additionals pictures for the left breast", I felt sick instantly. From that call until today I was a wreck, it was always on my mind I was going crazy with all the what if's. Thankfully, I have a loving and supporting family/friends who kept me in peace with prayers and encouraging words. I went today for the follow up visit and it turned out as I hoped and prayed it woud. They took about 4 different pictues for the radiologist to review and after a little while she came back and said all showed fine with no additional concerns. Praise God!! I hope my experience with the scary call back will ease minds and give some peace to those who are in the same position. God bless to all!

I appreciate that encouragement Pam. My wife got a call back a couple of days ago because of calcification in her left breast. The person who called told her they didn't think it was anything to be worried about but they just wanted a better look. However, we both lost our mothers in their 40's to breast cancer (we are both 42) so you can imagine it has caused our anxiety to skyrocket. The earliest she could get an appointment for addition tests is almost two weeks away, so I've been doing research for two days in an outward attempt to help ease her fears...but inwardly I'm trying to ease mine.

Fortunately she has been getting regular mammograms for years now, and just this past February had a voluntary MRI just for precautionary purposes, so I'm praying that even if this is a worst case scenario it will have been caught very early. But more fervently I'm praying that this will be a best case scenario of nothing more than harmless calcification!

I'm new here I just got a call back. I had a mammogram Monday got a call that
evening, they got me in tomorrow on Wednesday. going to do a retest and then
if needed an ultrasound. I have an annual mammogram was a year ago and they
saw some changes they said in my left breast.

I will be 70, no breast cancer history, I used to have fibrocystic breasts, my doc
told me to quit drinking coffee and reduce caffeine and that stopped the pain. I
also had lost 50 pounds years ago I have regained 10 but I'm still in pretty good
condition. I had a hysterectomy almost 20 years ago and still take premarin, that
may have to stop, we shall see. Hate to it keeps me young, but oh well.

I have never had a recall before so I'm nervous, but they are doing it quickly, the
tech said she notified my doctor and that they will make sure I know if anything
is wrong before I leave so that's not going to leave me hanging like so many of
you have been. I think I have a good facility and also a good doc, hoping for
the best and no matter what I will work through it. I have been under so much
stress the last year or two nothing would surprise me. A mentally challenged
daughter of 44 to deal with and a MIL with dementia/alzheimers, they are both
placed now so I' hoping to be able to distress. Will get my answers tomorrow.

I had a callback from my recent mammogram too. I have always had dense breast tissue and cysts so I usually end up having an ultrasound and all is well. I just went for the callback u/s today and the radiologist explained that cysts show up as white spots on a mammogram and so they have to check them out and see if they are cysts or solid tumors. That made me feel better. As long as I have cystic breasts, I will probably get callbacks. They're scary though.

So my obgyn found a lump a year ago in my right breast, she sent me for a mammogram, they said it was OK. My primary doctor sent me for a ultrasound, they said it was a fluid filled cyst. My doctor wanted me to biopsy it to be sure but I decided not to. Went back in for a yearly mammogram and just got a call back. I go in Monday for diagnostic mammogram and a ultrosound for the same lump that hasn't moved a year later. Has anyone ever heard of this? To cyst stay that long in the same place? My mom is freaking out cause my grandma passed away in her 50's from breast cancer. I'm only 35 in case anyone was wondering.

Sherrie.... I had a call back also from my mammogram since I went to a different place 2 years ago they didn't have any pictures to compare to the one's I just took 2wks ago. So I go in for my second mammogram and ultrasound the technician did show me a small spot on my right front of breast when they took the pictures and the lab technician looked at them the technician came back and said she wanted me to have a ultrasound because the spot didn't break up. They said it may be just a cyst or tissue sitting there it could be something that been there along time they just wanted to be sure so I'm waiting on a phone call back from my dr. I'm very nerves sad heart racing I hope my results come back fine. This site did make feel better

Went for my 3rd Mammogram this morning and 3 hours later got a call back to come in tomorrow. I'm 50 and prob haven't had one in 5 - 6 years (should be keeping up on it however, wasn't sure why my dr. was trying to push me in right in at 40 when I was still bf my baby and there is no history). So tomorrow have to have right breast redone with a diagnostic mammogram and and u/s. A bit nervous. This forum is helping to relieve some fear. I have gained a bit more weight since my last one so hoping it's just something to do with that. Thank you for the posts on here.

Well, everything turned out to be fine for now. I think the biggest problem was this clinic didn't get the results of my last two mammograms so had nothing to compare it to. They do want me to return in 6 months just to double check the R. Breast with a mammogram and ultrasound again. By then they should also have my first two results. Glad to have that test done!

Just joined. Glad to have found women who are as scared as me and many who discovered there was nothing about which to be afraid. Mammogram on Monday, get them yearly, post-menopausal, and received a call back for follow up mammogram and ultrasound to right breast. Scared, yes, and nervous and have done much reading. I realize there are strong chances nothing is wrong, but I can't help but be fearful. I have a great diagnostic center and was told I would know everything Monday after the tests. I was told if a biopsy is required, it will be done there immediately. Glad for such quick attention to the situation, but I will remain fearful until I know something. My imagination is getting the best of me right now. Will be glad when Monday arrives.

try not to worry. This has happened to me twice now thanks to my hard to read dense breast tissue. Both times needed biopsy....both times all was well. Deep breaths!
