Many of you have heard about my best friend, Stella, who lives in OH and visits me occasionally.  Her husband is very, very ill and in the hospital.  No he doesn't have cancer but he is diabetic which can be pretty scary when you have even little illnesses.  about four weeks ago he began with a bad cough and a fever.  The doctor took a chest xray and gave him antibiotics.  He seemed a little better, but he was still sweating like crazy and chilling.  He changed shirts four and five times a day and sometimes Stella had to change the sheets on the bed twice a day. After another week they went back to the dr and this time he said it just had to run its course and it was probably a virus.  Evidently at the office he did not have a temperature.
At nearly three weeks he was no better, he had lost 20# (his guess) and he could do nothing but sleep and cough. He barely ate anything. He sounded terrible over the phone.  When they planned to see the dr again I told Stella to tell the dr a nurse friend suggested they do a blood culture to see what was causing all this.  The dr said it would take a week for the blood culture to come back and he was sure he would be better when it ran its course.  They also gave him some IV fluid because he was dehydrating.  Of course that again made him feel a little better for a short time.
That was ten days ago.  Monday night Stella called saying he had a fever again, she was sure of it.  I asked if she took his temperature and she said she didn't have a thermometer, she had given it to one of her kids.  I strongly suggested she find one in the neighborhood and borrow it.  Neighborhood being out in the country.....  She didn't want to bother anyone and of course there were no drugstores within 25 miles that would be open.
So yesterday she went to the drugstore and then took his temperature.  It was 103.4!!!!!  It just happened that the drs office called to see how he was doing.  When she told the nurse, she told her to take him to the E.R.  She took him to a local clinic emergency room and from there he was transported by ambulance to a bigger hospital in Warren.
The very first thing they did was take a blood culture!!!
I relate all this because I know they could use some prayers.  AND to show once again you cannot let a doctor  play guessing games.  It is very possible he could have some really serious blood infection.  Meanwhile his sugar count is running rampant. Really his life is in danger.  I'm hoping tonight will bring some better news from her.  Today is her birthday.  They have been married fifty years also.

MK, good grief!!!! I felt so sad reading that. I certainly hope tonight brings better news. You have always answered my posts and given me insight (thank you!) and now I will try to return my gratitude!! I am praying for your friends, and I desperately hope it is something that can be fixed with proper treatment. I am praying for you also, I can "hear" how worried you are. Please take care and let us know how everyone is.

Last night's report was that he is eating, the hospital food is delicious. Hmmm no green jello? They are filling him with IV liquids and antibiotics, but he still had a temp of 101.6 yesterday afternoon with all of that. Still chillin' and sweating. Urinalysis was clear. Waiting yet for blood results. He sees a rheumatologist for some long named condition I know little about so they are communicating with him to see if it might be something he can suggest. I told Stella over a week ago to call his other doctors offices and explain his situation and see if they could help. He also sees a kidney doctor on a regular basis. Will report in again. This is really crazy how sick he is. Jo-Ann said it sounds a lot like her problems this summer. Thanks for your prayers, MK

Prayers for your friend Mary Kay.  But I have to admit the following line made me chuckle:  " he was transported by ambulance to a bigger hospital in Warren. "  I am from Warren.  It is a small town and if that is where he went for a bigger hospital I am thinking he is out in the country, clear the hell out in the country. He must be at St. Joe's or Trumbull.  Both are excellant but of course I would side with the Catholic one.   In fact I am going to be at that hospital on Saturday.

Hey Annette!!! Yes, they live where I used, to just over the Ashtabula line. Hospitals are in Greenville, Pa., Warren or Ashtabula--all at least 25 miles away. The put an emergency clinic in Andover some years ago. He is in St. Joes. That is also where my youngest was born.

Anyhow yesterday's report is going in the right direction. He is no better, BUT there is an infectious disease doctor on his case now. He said he would be testing for diseases that cause high temps and chilling like lupus, sclera derma, etc. He is running all sorts of tests. And he told Larry not to even dream about going home this weekend, it would not happen. Everyone is much relieved that he is handling things now. If only this had not gone on so long before he was consulted!!! Will keep you all updated on the mystery illness. MK

My thoughts and prayers are with your friends too. I hate to see anyone be soo sick for soo long. I sure hope they get to the bottom of this and soon. The best place for him is in the hospital until they figure this out.

Hugs to you, and your friends

The latest from the big hospital in Warren. Larry is in CCU tonight. His heart rate went way high so they put him there to monitor him. Still no tests have come back positive for anything. His red and white blood count is low as well as the platelet count, so they are talking bone marrow tests. Honestly, more than five weeks have now passed. He is getting very discouraged. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. MK

I'm praying here for your friend.  I hope they nail this down soon and he can get on the road to recovery!

Hi gals,

I will be praying for her too. Although my next ultrasound test is in 6 months time, I will be reading these posts often. I really hope all goes well for Stella and her hubby.
