Hi all,  I was just wondering if any of you use a tanning bed.  If so, do you get any relief from your pain and fatigue when you go tanning?  Is it dangerous to use a tanning bed, if you only do so for a short period of time?  Need some advice on this please.

Hi Tammy,
Welcome to the CFS board. I have not heard of using a tanning bed to treat pain, fatigue or any CFS-related symptoms. I've never gone in a tanning bed, but when I spend time in the sun, it increases my fatigue. But that is just my personal reaction. The only real danger I know about using a tanning bed, is skin cancer. As far a risking developing skin cancer, tanning beds have the same risk as the sun.

I go to a tanning bed and have for a few years now but I only go for a month or so to get a tan to wear shorts on vacations etc... becuase I am so white. but it tends to make me more tired I think.. I take alot of vitamins everyday though especially vitamins B's. ... they will give you energy and drinking alot of water and eating the right foods. I notice a difference in how I feel when I eat better and get exercise and sleep better at night.

That is a good point, that common sense and healthy lifestyle go a long way towards coping well with CFS. See? Not so crazy after all...! B-Vitamins help me out a lot too, but unfortunately, I'm allergic to them--some of them anyway, but I haven't been able to figure out which, so I have to avoid them all. Everything is just so complicated with CFS, isn't it?

I looked into the idea of tanning beds and in some people at least they do boost levels of endorphins (feel good chemicals) so might help; only problem there is, if they do that for you, you can get hooked ! ( I kid you not, I have a friend with this prob.) Typical addicts are often exercise-addicts. Apart from that a tanning bed will give you Vitamin D. But it will also have a slight risk of giving skin cancer - not usually a problem unless you are going to all the tanning salons in town for the max time... that's how the addicts avoid the safe max rule.
Probably one of the safest things to try, if maybe useless.
