What kind of doctor can prescribe adhd medication for chronic fatigue syndrome???

I have been searching the web for hourssssss and i cannot find this answer. I have been to pain mgmt docs, and primary care/ urgent care and at leat 5 docs have already digonosed me with fibromyalgia and chric fatigue syndrome ( my mom has both of these as well). I am 26 and i feel like I am 80. I have insomnia but after taking medication (benzos, muscle relaxers, and sleepy teas) i will finally get to sleep but it does not matter if I sleep 8 hours or 20 hours I still cant get out of bed because Im so tired/ pain and stiffness. (I also have a purtruding disk in my neck, along with a bone spur, Thoriac Outlet Syndrome, and Chronic Myofascial Pin) Im the lucky one right!? haha anyways i finally have good insurance and I plan to see a rheumatologist as soon as possible and pain management and a primary care doc. The pain consumes my life but recently I had a job (12 hour shifts, and sleeping full 8 hours) and I was falling asleep on the freeway I almost killed myself a few times and contastly at work i was passing out like nodding out every 10 min! I was recently put on Cymbalta from Prozac for 5 years but I dont think thats it ive always been tired but have never worked that long and have had to drive that far to work. SOOO to make this longest story short.. I know i need some tyoe of ADHD medication to help (I feel like I almost have narcolepsy at times and people think im on drugs) i am not taking any pain meiation now but i have had norco and percocet in the past (which dont even work anymore my tolerance is way too high) im hopig to get on a fethynal or some kind of patch like that so I dont have to take so many pills constipating me! ( Sorry for the TMI). but ive read so many great reviews how the adhd meds help with this fibro and CFS so I would reallly appreciate if someone could help me and tell me which doctor to go to for that??? Please dont say psychiatrist because Ive literally called 20 around my areas and they are booked for MONTHS!!! thank you guys so much I love this forum and appreciate everything you guys share on here, its nice to know I am not alone!

Hiya -
I totally empathise and have similar issues, except for any insomnia.
I know this is a paradox, but maybe something to consider/rule out: perhaps you have ideopathic hyposomnia? I have it and it is very debilitating.
In which case you could be prescribed modafinel and/or adderal / ritalin by a doctor.

Good luck!

Hi Frenchielover, I am sorry you have to deal with so much. I have Fibro & CFS also & have to deal with the sleep issues. The insomnia is from the Fibro & really conflicts with the CFS. When I was first sick I was working at a job & I went through exactly what you are going through, I still do. Any time I have to live by a schedule, I crash & can't seem to have enough energy to do the job I need to do. I need to be able to sleep when I need to without any time limits. I can do one day of getting up by the clock, like for a doctors appointment but anything beyond that puts me into a crash & I can sleep for 20 hours & get up feeling like I have not slept, that is the malaise that is such a characteristic ME/CFS/SEID.

I wish I could answer your question as to a doctor to go to but I have never heard of using ADHD meds to help with CFS. I think I would give a Rheumatologist a try, I think they are more up on these kinds of illnesses then other Drs. What kind of a Dr dx'd you? Did you talk to him/her about using an ADHD drug?

It really sounds like you have so much illness & pain that you probably could get SSD. I had to go on it because I was in the same boat. I found I couldn't work. How is your Mom, is she able to work? Take care of yourself & take the time you need to to make the decisions that you have to make. Don't beat yourself up for having these illnesses & not being able to do your job. If you were well you would do it with energy & vigor. Keep posting, many soft & gentle hugs, Denise

My doctor who is in internal medicine prescribes my Adderall and vyvanse. I think he sees the need for this to enhance my quality of life, and how it does help me. I have to say that this has been the only real consistent drug that has helped me.....to break through the fog a bit, and lessen the heaviness of the fatigue. Without it I would not be able to work, thus not make an income. I will trade some risk for being able to still work and enjoy some things that I can afford. This is a cruel ailment.....hard to convince doctors that this is real, and to get disability someday. I have to hope that modern medicine will advance enough to figure something out soon.

Have you looked into seeing a Psychiatrist for this?
My Mom has CFS and was offered an Adderall script in place of Nuvigil, because her insurance didn't cover the Nuvigil rx.
My Mom cannot take Adderall due to past issues on it, but she has new insurance and can now feel better as she is back on Nuvigil. ☺
Her psychiatrist prescribes it for her.
Adderall has worked well for me for years, rx'ed by the same psychiatrist (I introduced my mom to his office a few years ago).
I was diagnosed with ADHD and started taking it before I got sick, however. Have you tried Provigil/Nuvigil? A Psychiatrist really knows these types of nootropic meds best, I would certainly think!
I would try seeing one with good ratings in your area, perhaps?

I would really limit driving from what you described if you are dozing off that much. Too dangerous. As I said earlier, I may be lucky to have found a doctor that prescribes me Adderall in order for me to function better. I don't have any history of abusing medication which is one reason he did this. I also had to convey to him the importance of me being able to work, and earn an income. One has to remember that ADHD medication can give you the sense that you have more energy than what you possess. So you still have to have discipline to moderate things. And, take a day or 2 off every 10 days or so. I would ask your doctor for a 10 day prescription to evaluate. No harm in that time period.

Is there any doctors that cure this-or do they all just throw meds at the symptoms?
Just my suggestion-look for a biological doc or alternative doc-one that is an MD and ask if they have had success with this type of issue. Seems to me the traditional docs will just med you un until you shutup

Actually I have seen both a traditional and functional doctor for this (both MD's by the way) and they both have prescribed Adderall for me from a qualify of life perspective. I certainly know this isn't a cure, but as I search for something more curative (with the help of my doctor) I take Adderall to help me function better. Again, I make sure to stay within the boundries of safety but why would I not take something that allows me to work and still have some semblance of a social life? I would like nothing better than to be off all medications, but given where I am today, I need to take this. I have a wife and 12 year old daughter than deserve an active father/husband in their lives as well. So it goes beyond me is what I am saying. After explaining that to my doctors, they readily agreed to give me this medication.

hey, I like Provigil WAY better than other stimulants. It doesnt give you a buzz or make you feel like you took cocaine. it DOES clear the mind fog. It's not addictive. No black market value. I have been prescribed this by psych, primary care, and sleep specialists. Also, you can buy it out of country with no script. Small amounts are okay to buy out of country. three month supply or less is a grey area legally...no one gets in trouble...larger amounts? big taboo!!!

I used to fall asleep driving...thank god, I don't do that anymore, but if I did still have trouble, I would STOP AN TAKE A CAT NAP!!!! !0 to 15 minutes of closing ur eyes can save someones life....You get charged with manslaughter for falling asleep at the wheel...it is just as prosecute-able as drunk driving!!!!

Good luck!!!
