I have CFS and have been ill for quite some time. I now have hypothyroidism also and am beginning to take Armour thyroid. I would like to know what the usual starting dose is. Has anyone taken this med? I need to start out as slowly as possible due to the many reactions I have to medications and am wondering if the dosage on my pres. is too high. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Armour is dessicated pig thyroid. The usual starting dose is 30 mg daily, with increases in 15 mg. increments every two to three weeks. It can take some time to titrate the best dosage, so patience is the by-word.

Thank you purple_lynx7 and Judy2. My dosage is 30 mg and I am going to cut it in half and start out with 15mg. Then, increase if I have no side effects.

Have you had side effects? I was on Levothyroxin but had to stop after the first few. I read somewhere that you were supposed to chew the Armour tablet but then some say just to swallow it. Which do you do?

Do you take it after a meal? Thanks for your help.

Any pig thyroid should be only swallowed on an empty gut.

If you chew it with a clean mouth (no food left) and leave under tongue, sublingually, then food is not a factor.

As other said, ramp up dose slow, or you go hyper.

Hello MeMaw,
I too take it and haven't really had any problems.
I started at 45mg I believe it was and am now up to 60.
I also take an adrenal supplement. These two
really helped a lot with energy. D Dawn
