I was diagnosed with CFS about 5 years ago. It’s been up and down but lately fairly improved if I pace myself. I’ve been under unusual emotional stress most recently. This issue I’m writing about may already be discussed, but I’m too exhausted to keep searching. Thank you in advance. I was treated for a UTI a few weeks ago with 10 days of Cefdinir. I stopped the med after the 10 days which was over a week ago. For the last few days I am more exhausted than I’ve been in a very long time. Even though I sleep 7 to 8 hours I’m exhausted when I wake and it lasts most if not all day. I can hardly get out of bed. I just want to sleep, though I don’t fall asleep. I try to read but can’t focus for long. Am I experiencing the negative results of the antibiotic? If so, how long might it last? Your comments and suggestions are most appreciated.

I've been on a similar drug, Ceftin, for a UTI for almost 10 days, and I'm exhausted too. I had symptoms of sinus infection in addition (pain in face) and horrible headaches every morning, sometimes at night also. My fever is finally gone, but I can't walk enough to go shopping because my legs give out.

I don't think my problem is the antibiotic but the disease. And maybe my diagnosis wasn't right either. I had only a few bacteria found and none were cultured. I have plenty of other disease problems, but haven't had these symptoms before. I've never had a UTI before either. Like you, I've been under tremendous stress lately. I haven't been diagnosed with CFS, but do have fibromyalgia.

I hope someone will have some idea if a UTI can cause this exhaustion.

On further researching pyelonephritis (really bad UTI) I found that sometimes the only symptoms seems to be exhaustion, especially in older people like me. So now I believe that my diagnosis may be correct, although I think I also had a nasty sinus infection, which I get sometimes.

I'm going to go to my PCP and see about getting refill on antibiotic, maybe a different one. Today I feel a little better, maybe because the sinus pain and headache are mostly gone. Since I've been on antibiotic I suspect another culture won't show anything. I don't feel like the problem is necessarily cured, as I am still unusually tired and achey.

I learned a lot more about UTI infections than I ever wanted to know, and I won't ignore exhaustion again!

Wow, this is interesting given I am dealing with this as well. My deal was an infection after abdominal surgery though, and not a UTI. But.....I was put on a 10 day course of Cipro and Flagyl at a high dose. about 4 days into this I started feeling really weird.....off balance, brain fog, anxiety, and being uncoordinated. And of course the constant tiredness. They wanted me to finish the medication given an infection after the surgery I had can be life threatening. I stopped the medication 4 days ago, but feel the same stuff going on. I have read the antibiotics can mess with the central nervous system after a certain point, causing the symptoms you and I are having. I just wish they would have told me this prior to taking. Not feeling connected with the real world and so out of it is giving me anxiety now, just not knowing when this will fade. I meet with my surgeon in 2 days, and I will have to see what to do about this. Some people have these side effects for a long time after stopping the medication. Any other comments here would be interesting.
