Hi everyone,

i was wondering what it means when my back clicks somewhere in the middle as i lower my left leg (once lifted) but it doesnt when i lift and lower my right leg! it does it every time even though and it doesnt hurt, it just makes quite a loud noise!

does this mean anything?

Nice to meet you. Wow, I have no idea. I have a musical body also but not in my mid back like yours. Do tell your doctor about it but since it's not causing pain it doesn't need to be immediately...in my opinion. Much of the noise in joints is from ligaments popping but the spine is something I wouldn't want to guess about. I know my hands, wrists, knees, feet and ankles...everything darn near pops but it hurts also. Mine is mostly arthritis and age related. Getting older sure isn't for wimps...lol

Keep in touch and let us know what you find out. Maybe someone else will post with a similar problem and answers.

Justme, Have you has surgery on your back? After fusion surgery, I noticed mine making a clicking sound, sometimes loud enough for my wife to hear as she sits on the other side of the room. I mentioned it to my doctor annd he said it is normal after surgery. I then asked him to do the surgery over as I wanted it to play a different song. He laughed. There was another thread about this some time back and we noticed that many of us have odd sounds coming from our bodies. I will say welcome to this site with reservations. Not becuase of the site but the reason you are here. You will find wonderful people here that have a great compassion for fellow CPers.

thanks chutz and fatherjohn for your msg, and no i havent had any surgery at all! ive had a few heart, chest issues and tight back muscles from sport and posture.

but this jus came on out of now where! it makes a kind of hollow sound/click. but it is wierd as it doesnt with my right leg.

I have had spinal fusion without the hardware and I have this clicking too... It feels like something is moving back into place...Odd, but I am glad I am not the only one.

I guess "shifting" would be a better word to use...it doesn't hurt most of the time, but it is a scary thing to happen..especially after a fusion...I thought those verts were cemented into place, so what exactly IS happening in there?

I wanted to add a welcome hello, but I'm not sure I have anything more to add than what's been said. I do know most of the time clicking sounds are caused by ligaments, as Chutz said, but I don't know in terms of the fusion issue. I've had a lumbar fusion, but no clicking in that area. Lots of clicking in other areas though! Sometimes in one hip joint but not the other. If your doctor can't give you an answer, perhaps a good PT can help identify the source.

thanks for your comments! its quite funny really coz it doesnt click on its own, it has to be when i lower my leg from bent position, and clicks once but i cant work out exactly where about it comes from. i told my physio and she says yh its fine and my rehab instructor who just noted it down, but it isnt my biggest issue as ive been on plenty of chats on this website with plenty of issues. im probably just falling apart!!! hehe.

what is a fusion? a few of you guys are mentioning it!

Welcome aboard! Sometimes my wife calls me Snap, crackle, pop! When I get up at night my body makes so many sounds sometime it wake wakes her up! The pops are the loadest by far, especially in my hip which was dislocated and shattered my pelvis, it sonds like one of those old fashion pop guns I had as a kid w/ a cork on a string! My neck crackles when I turn it, that sound makes my wife nausious! She sometimes tells me to stop moving my head around in bed at night. My knees lock and then snap open when I force them. Then there are so many other misculanius noises coming from every part of my broken down old body, it's almnost commical. I get comments about it all the time from people at work and strange looks in places like elivators. I probably could never sneak up on anyone as they would hear me coming from across the room! Yours is probably nothing to worry about or your Doc probably would have checked it out. They must hear all kinds of sounds from their patents! Maybe we all can form a band and use our bodies for instuments!!! Good Luck and stick around, we have a great bunch of people here even if they are all beat-up and broken!!!

thanks Pete, you made me laugh! i feel sorry for your wife, your sounds remind me of bubble wrab which u wrap china cups in!!! well i havent had the chance to tell my doc yet, but ill prob wont go as it doesnt hurt. ive had so many problems i feel like im annoying everyone with my little stories. feels wierd coz im only 20, and already having health problems at this age!!

The bubble wrap is a perfect analogy!!

Somehow I got it in my head you had a fusion. Guess it was from all our posts - those of us with various parts in us. A fusion in reference to our spines is when one or more of the disks are removed (usually removed because they're badly herniated or damaged and causing serious problems) and usually some screws are put in to hold the space together and another material inserted to replace the disk, and over time it all fuses together. This is probably not a very good description but it's the best I can do at the moment!

So ok, now that I realize you're just having the popping sounds, I'll bet it's a ligament sticking somewhere, and that can happen on one side and not the other. Again, it's probably an issue for a PT to deal with.

Hi justme,

Hopefully it is nothing too serious! You can hear both of my shoulders crack & pop from across the room, but I have had multiple surgeries on them. The popping actually began way back when I tore part of my joint, it just never went away. It really freaks people out. A lot of times I think our bodies just make noises, but I'd get it checked out to be safe! You don't want to go around messing with your back!
