Do you like birthdays? I mean YOUR birthdays! What were your birthday celebrations as a kid? Is there one particular birthday that stands out in your memory?
I've never been too fond of birthdays. Mine is in mid summer, my least favorite time of year, and since school was out there wasn't much celebration. I don't remember any parties with lots of friends over...but mom did have pictures of a party for me with kids of the people they hung out with. I don't remember it though. The one birthday I do remember was when I was probably 13. Dad had spent many hours down in the shop at school building me a desk. He would have had to stay after school for many evenings to accomplish the job. So on my birthday we had some sort of special supper and a cake of some sort, then he backed the truck up to the back door and out came my new desk. I remember my uncle was there and helped Dad unload the desk.
I do hope my reaction was what he wanted because at 13 a desk just isn't very exciting. I tried to be sincere oo'ing and ah'ing over it but inside I was so disappointed. It wasn't until I was on my own that I fully appreciated the gift he had given me....the most precious gift of all...his time and love! I still have that desk and currently have one sewing machine set up on it and am using it. It's still in use after all of these years and it will be for a long time to come.
What birthday memories do you have from your childhood?
Play fair. Don't hit people. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
