Hello, I am new and never posted here before.  I see a Rheumatologist because my family doctor didn't want to deal with my pain issues.  He has tested me for RA it was negative, my inflammation rate was double what it should be.  He tells me I have fibro (guessing that is the easy answer since I am bipolar).  I keep telling him it is my joints not my muscles. My hands and fingers are tingly all the time.  I wake up in the morning (if I sleep much) and my back and limbs are so stiff.  Fingers swollen and a couple fingers hurts like heck to bend.  I am on Cymbalta, Lyrica and Tramdol for the "condition".  He said yesterday that my fibro symptoms are better...no da!! I never had fibro symptoms!!!  Then he told me that he doesn't know what to do..I don't fit the normal criteria.

Should I see a pain management doctor?  What will they do?  I will be 40 this Friday and I feel 85 on a daily basis.  I want to be able to function and enjoy my 12 year old son.  I find I am irritable so much because I am in so much pain.

Please help!!!

I would definately see a PM doctor. I too was seeing a rheumatologist first, did all the testing and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I tried lyrica, tramadol, 3 different muscle relaxers & 3 different anti-inflammatory drugs but nothing helped. When I told her that I wanted to quit working and that the tramadol wasn't strong enough she told me that she wouldn't give recommendations for SSDI and that she did not prescribe narcotics. I was out of there and have been with a PM for the last 5 months. I am now on stronger drugs and have filed for SSDI. We are still trying to find the right mix of meds for me at the PM office but at least I have something to help with the pain. I also do not have fibro as the rheumy said just over zealous arthritis in my entire spine. Good Luck!!

Thank you so much for you information.  May I ask what medication the PM has put you on??  I am just at my wits end.  No one understands how it feels to have someone misdiagnos or not believe that you are in pain.

Welcome to our forums. You will find so much support and a new family to go along with it.

My husband made the same statements you just did. He refused for the longest time to agree with me and the doctors that he had fibro. He always stated it was his JOINTS not muscular! His common statement is I'm 39 and feel 95. So close. His pain would get him in all his joints. Hands, elbows, ankles, knees and so on.

So now about 8 months later hes on pain meds, a combo of Ryzolt and codiene. Also taking Savella. Trying to tolerate the last med again for the second time.

He sees a PCP but will end up at a PM doc like myself. Hes happy to deal with the fibro dx for it at least gets him some relief and doctor attention. His RA tests were negative everytime he took it also.

Hes also so stiff he fell down a set of stairs because his ankles were so stiff. He is also like you if he sleeps he ends up getting up because his back is so stiff it hurts.

Just go into this with an open mind.

Lori, it seems to me that you really need to get a second opinion about a diagnosis before going to see a pain management dr. Fibro is not an inflammatory process so with your rates so high something other then that is obviously going on with you. You need a definitive diagnosis maybe from a different rhuemy. A PM is probably just going to throw pain meds at you without finding or addressing the underlying condition but with a real diagnosis you maybe able to get the true problem under control without jumping deeper into the pain meds pool. You deserve to be pain free and able to enjoy your son but stronger pain meds may actually make that even more difficult. Please consider getting another opinion. Lisa
If I can laugh at it, I can live with it.
