Whitebeard, it sounds like you had the same surgery that I had on Sept. 2. The minute I woke up, my arm and shoulder pain were gone due to the nerves that were trapped being released or whatever. He fixed C5/6 and C6/7 Diskectomy and Fusion. My neck still hurts really bad up at the base of my skull. I don't have to wear the brace anymore but I still do when it hurts so bad. Will you have to have more surgery on you neck?

Hello Pain!...I will have the same surgery done in a year or so, after I recover from the first one here in a few months (fusion L4-L5)...sometime in February. Please keep us all posted here, and let us know how you are doing. Take care now, and enjoy your Thanksgiving Holiday.

I originally had C6-7 done in 1985 This last time the 28th of Sept was C5=6 yep pain in arm was gone right away, but the pain in the neck and base of skull comes and goes, actually it is usually always there but just the intensity increases or decreasees, when it gets really bad or I get the gag reflex( laryngeal spasms) I put the soft collar on, and it helps it allot! I was told that might never go away, and the surgeon said the surgery would only help the pain in my arms. as an added note, I was having right should pain I even had surgery on my right shoulder in Oct of 2007? It helped a little but not allot, but surprisingly after my C5-6 surgery that seems to be gone tooo! I hope I don't have to have anymore surgery on my neck, but my surgeon told me that ususally if you have a disk fusion, that the disk above or below the fusion will go bad and need surgery within ten years of the original fusion. I went nearly 25 years so I keep my fingers crossed. How ever I have a herniated disk at L4-5 that gives me fits, and sooner or later I will have to get that worked on too! that has already given me foot drop in my left foot! And of course I have some major problems at T-12 ( the disk is torn and herniated and I have nerve impingement from bone spurs at T-3 and T-8 But so far they won't touch any of the Thorasic disk! Thus the PM Docs, also it is hard to find a doc who will give epidural injections in the Thorasic area!

So over all Painsince91 are you glad you got the surgery? and how are you doing with it other than the pain in the neck and base of the skull! Now did you have both C5-6 and C6-7 done at the same time? Did they use donor cadaver bone for the graft and did they use the plat with the screws? My first fusion they took the bone from my pelvis and I had no plate or screw holding it together! Where they took the bone graft hurt the worst and I was laid up for a very long time because they were afraid that the graft would be jarred out of place with any sudden movement til it got a chance to take hold, plus they ended up damaging my vagus nerve and my vocal cords on my right side are paralyzed (till to this day) I just found that out before I had this surgery! Anyway I do hope you are doing OK, glad to see you post, I haven't seen a post from you in quite awhile!

Please take care and don't be a stranger here!

I wish you well and Good Luck to You!

Hi Whitebeard, yes I had the C5/6 and C6/7 done at the same time. They used cadaver bone and I have the titanium plate and 6 screws. I am glad I had the surgery because my right shoulder and arm pain was excruciating, but I sure hoped it would help my neck pain. Actually my neck pain is higher up than it was, but it is excruciating at times also. The surgeon told me that the discs above the surgery site were very bad also and would cause more pain. I too have Thorasic pain also. Right in the canter of my back is where something popped when I was lifting at work 18 years ago. There is a torn disc there that cannot be repaired. I also have really bad feet problems so there's never an actual "pain free" time. I can't shop like "normal" people bacause of my feet and I love to be on the computer but that hurts mt neck, so what can you do? Also since my DH passed away 4 weeks today, I have really been in even more severe pain.
I wold love to post more but it's just hard for me.
I have a frien who has been in the most severe pain for so long and surgeries and treatments haven't helped much but he just recently had something he called a nerve stimulator or maybe that's not exactly what it is but he is a different man now. He is thrilled to death. He can just push a button and cut the pain off. I am going to talk to him about it.
I'm so sorry for all your pain. It sounds like you have even more problems than I do. God bless you
To everyone else who is reading this, I'm so sorry for your pain also. I can sympathize with all of you.

There are a lot of older posts here about stimulators and several of our members have one, but I'm not one of them. You may try doing a search of Healing Well for "SCS" or stimulator (maybe another member could give a better search term?). There are also pain pumps that some members have. They are seem worth exploring and searching old threads of Healing Well is a good way to start.
