dear friends,
i'm 37 yrs old and have been a martial artist since i was 9 yrs old. i am glad to have read guitar's success story with his back problems because i think i'm experiencing the same thing and have been looking for hope.  i've been competing my whole life in olympic style tkd and open karate tournaments. i have had many blessings to include a Texas state karate grand champion in 2005; however, in 2005 i was rear ended and havent been the same since. got an mri in 2006 and showed slight bulge between l4 and l5.
i continued training, as my body responded well to some pt, but have had mental fears of worsening my condition. i really enjoyed performing jumping and spinning kicks and all sorts of acrobatic movements that make katas look nice and flashy, but i've refrained from training like i used to bec of fear of aggravating injuries. i miss training hard without fears, as it gave me great satisfaction. i've reverted to doing the elliptical instead of running and just do light weight training with lots of reps to prevent injury.
i guess i need to get another mri and see how things look in my back.
reading your articles has inspired me to have faith and perhaps get back into the path i love.

Hi John!!

I'm so sorry I missed your first post. Not many get by me but Dani did a wonderful job of finding you hiding in another thread and introducing you around.

What has gone on recently with your doctor and your MRI results. Did he/she tell you not to train or compete any more? I sure can see where it would be a mental block for fear of doing more or permanent damage but I do think a medical opinion would help alleviate your concerns.

But even if you decide to back off high level competition and training you can still be very involved in the sport. How about doing some teaching?? You might offer some for free at first and then with that experience you should be able to find a paying position. Working with kids might be awesome for you since you started early also. If this is your passion you can find a way to be involved. We can't continue every sport or activity indefinitely, but we can still be involved at some level for most or all of our lives.

Can you share a bit more information as to how you are doing now and if you are still planning on competing??
