ok two days ago i was doing some light house work and later that evening i noticed i had pain on the right side of my ribs.. for those who dont know me i have chronic back pain, stenosis, DDD, proturding disks etc.. hence im concerned that i did muscle damage or have a hernia so i went to the emergency the next day yesterday and the doctor of course cant find anything andsent me home... now this morning it's bulging out again right from when i woke up not doing anything.. it;s painful to touch, got raditating pain in my right leg like a burning feeling in my upper thigh and sometimes it goes down to my ankle... im not sure what to do now that i went to see a doc that doesnt find anything wrong yet i know it;s there... i have a fammily doc appointment on the 27th but not sure what to do unitl then ive iced it. taken my pain meds, rested when need to ... i have one other emergency room i can go to that;s near by or should i just wait ... thanks in advance to who reply hope all have a LP day.. You said("   now this morning it's bulging out again right from when i woke up not doing anything.. it;s painful to touch, got raditating pain in my right leg like a burning feeling in my upper thigh and sometimes it goes down to my ankle..  " ) What is bulging out and where is this bulge?  If it is in your abdomin or groin area, and it is very very painful?? If it is, then maybe a trip back to the ER might be the best thing to do, or call them, most hospitals have a Triage nurse and she might be of great help to you, and be able to assess your situation and let you know if you should go to the ER or not!  Make sure you document what you were doing the "when, how's and why's of the situation" Also your pain levels and where your pain is! Although most of the time Hernia's are just a nuisance, that have to be watched. and monitored,... Hernia's can sometimes become medical emergencies, that require prompt medical attention!  And of course allot depends on the type of hernia it is!  Reguardless it should be diagnosed and monitored by a medical professional. I do wish you well and hope that everything works out well for you!

I agree with WB that depending on what you meant it might warrant an urgent phone call to your doctor and/or a trip to the ER (phone the doc first, if they send you to the ER it's likely to carry more weight).

There are a lot of things that can cause horrible pain -- muscle injury, pinched nerve, nerve/disc damage, etc. There's not really anything an ER can do for those issues. They will take time & rest & maybe a specialist or two to treat. Can you get on your doctor's cancellation list so that if someone cancels before the 27th you can get in earlier?

feel better,
frances

WB hit the nail on the head. ER docs just don't always "get it". In my small area of the world, we all know that the ER docs are the ones that noone will go to in their own practice, so they work at the ER. I know that is not the case everywhere (especially in hospitals with trauma units) but it is a real problem here.

Perhaps an urgent care clinic could help.

It's a lot cheaper to go to a family MD than clinics and ERs. They can often get you in the same day. A good family doc will know you if you go regularly, will take more time, and will care more.

My family doc has looked at my right side pain under the ribs and did a little test for hernia. Sit leaning back a little on couch, lift both legs straight up, tensing belly. If there's a lump, it can be a hernia. I don't have a lump, so am getting sonogram for gallbladder, checking pancreas which is connected too.

thanks for all the replies, sorry for the confusion the bulge and soreness is located on my right side of my back round my last rib and kinda feels like a gulf ball.. it was like that the first day and actually three days later still in the same spot at times its not as noticble to touch but can still feel the bulge and pain... when i touch the lump and surroundiong area it also is tender sometimes hard to breath. i origanally went to see my family doc but she said they would most likely want to take an x-ray and it would be an long wait at the ER but i would get the results quicker than waiting to get into have an xray somewere else. so they recommended the ER.. I explained all symptoms and were the ain was to the ER doc and he didnt find anything i understand that not all doctors are like that but i felt brushed of not important... i realise that its an ER and they have more serious patients to tend to but he didnt need to dismiss my problem so easily... thanks for listening hope i cleared things up..take care thanks in advance for replies...Twiggy2

Is this bulge, in your back really firm and hard, like a knotted up muscle? like in a muscle spasm? or is this bulge solf and plyable and it is sore really tender in muscle around the area? Allot of times a hernia is a weak spot in the muscle and sometimes the weak spot gives way and the muscle separates and your intestines can bulge out through this weak spot, this is usually in the adominal area. and this can often slide back in a disappear and then come back out again. But this is not normally in the back area. Sometimes a muscle can spasm and really knot up into a ball, it is extremely tender and hurts really bad! But what you describe sure sounds like a hernia, and I suppose you could have that in any area, and it could be just another underlying muscle bulging through it. What ever it is, it definitely needs to be looked at by a doctor, and thoroughly checked, out. Make sure you describe everything to the doctor about it! I hope you can get it checked out and find out what it is! Good Luck to YOU!!!

thanks. it most likely could be a muscle strain of sorts it is a times quite painful. Of all the regular pain i have daily this one takes the cake. I wouldnt havethought that a spasm or strain could be so bad...the bulge feels hard but tender at the same time... i wish i could be more specific unfortualty hard to describe.. And yes its still present since the 13th of october i would think that if it was a strain it would show some kind of healing by now but maybe not. i see my family doc on the 27th for a routine visit hopefully she will be able to examine more throughly and get to the bottom of things..will keep u guys posted as to the outcome ...hope all have LP days Twiggy2

so i read that muscle strains can last anywere from a few days to weeks no symptoms indicating that of a bulge. and well its been that with nothing new still have bugle under the right side of my lower rib but the pain has gotten pretty bad. it somnetimes hides when im standing up but if i bend a little you can feel it there. i dont want to wait at the emergency for 4 hours again like i did the other time last week i cant sit that long and the seats are metal and very uncomfortable.. i only have 4 more days till i see my family doc i wish i could speed the days. trying to stay mobile i did some gardening with a friend the other day hoping it would lossen me up a bit but no luck, im afraid to make it worse but i know that movement is best. take care

awaiting MRI results i had on nov 12th. waiting is awful i hope that there good but if not that surgery would be an option at this point. Pain meds havnt been working for awhile now we even tried changes to different meds they sucked to. I think i pinched a nerve i have pain in my left arm between my hand and elbow and only bothers me when im sleeping or extendind it outward the also "muscle spasms" is still there and produces pain whenever it feels like it.. I see my family doc on the 22nd not sure if she'll have the results in yet but will let you know what happens...Gentle hugggs and low pain days to all...Twiggy2...
