Thanks Chart for starting this new thread.

My daughter left Saturday night to go back home, they came for breakfast on Thanksgiving and then went up to her Grandmothers for the big Turkey day dinner, I seen her a few hours on  Friday  as she took me to the bank and the store to pic up a few things, and then they came over to visit for a short while on Saturday before they left to go home.   I really did not see that much of her on this visit! I got by on my own!   A friend from church took me to the surgeons office Monday afternoon and I got all the staples out! Boy that felt good to get them out! I told him about the hot searing pain in my arm when I move it up above my head and he said it was the muscles in my neck that were spasming and tightening around the nerve bundles that was causing that pain and it would go away in time.  He did write a script for Physical therapy, He wants to see me again the 25th of February and I am to have x-rays then too!  I had my PT eval yesterday evening in a town close by, all country roads and I drove there myself, Doc said as long as I wasn't taking all the extra pain meds I could drive but to be careful and avoid any type of traffic situations, country road is the name of the game around where I live, heck even the town that I go to for PT only has one stop light, and it is less than 45 hundred people so it is not a metropolis by any since of the word!  That is all I will drive though,  and I go tomorrow morning at nine thirty for more PT. Anyway they want to work on relaxing the muscles and relieving some of the pain first!  After I got my staples out Tuesday night I woke up choking and gasping for air, and it hurt my neck so bad, so I got out my mask and machine and set it up and started using it, but it was only for a couple of hours! It felt really good. Well last night I used it all night, and I was up allot yesterday anyway. Well this morning I was in terrible pain, hot searing pain shooting from my neck and incision area up to the base of my skull on the left side and down my left shoulder and into the left arm! It took allot of break through pain meds and Ice pack to get on top of the pain! So today I have not done anything, stayed at home all day  I finally walked down the drive way tonight to check my mail box!  I don't know if it was using my PAP and mask all night that caused it or being up to much yesterday or a combination of both!   I will tell you the pain is allot worse with this surgery, it is such a searing burning pain that just knocks your socks off!  I do hope that it doesn't last to much longer!  I really was hoping I would be better by now! You know I have an uncle that just died and I wanted so bad to go over to Fort Wayne to his funeral this Saturday, but I just can not do that yet!  Heck I would not even be able to sit in a car that long even if I had some one to drive me, as it is a good 185 mile one way over there!  Enough of my complaining! I do want to thank-you all for all the support, I can't begin to tell you how much it means to me!
I wish you all well! Thanks again Chart for everything you have done for me! Becky thanks for the support and healing hugs I really need them!

It's so good to hear from you WhiteBeard. I've missed you, but I can certainly understand where you are coming from with the pain and needing to recover. I wish I could help more, but words are all I have to send, so I will send you words of support and well wishes.

All my best!

I hope with time and as your wound heals that the burning pain will go away..
It was probably your cpap mask, it might have hit the area wrong, hopefully
that'll start getting better too...
well wishes and more prayers...

   Dear White Beard,

Gosh, it sure is good to see you posting! *hugg* It sounds like the recovery is slow going this time. I wish it weren't such a hard struggle! I know that if you say it burns and hurts..well, then, it must hurt something terrible. You have an increadibly high pain threshhold. I hope the pain eases up a little more each day as you heal.

It is great you have a PT that is ready to jump in and help. That could be good. Hopefully he is able to loosen up and strengthen the effected muscle areas. It would be so nice if you were able to finally rest somewhat comfortably. I can well imagine you haven't had a decent nights rest in quite a while now.

Our prayers and hearts are with you! It is so good to see you posting again!

*warm hugg*

Wow driving yourself to PT, I do hope you have a collar on while driving. That would at least offer a little protection. Its a shame you couldn't get someone to drive you though. Maybe PT can get those muscles to give some and give you some much needed relief in the pain dept, you sure have been thru the wringer a time or two since this whole thing started.

Keep us posted on how you are coming along.

Hi Whitebeard:

I am so sorry that I haven't been around to offer my support, as you have always been there for me!  I am recovering from surgery (pump replacement) and taking care of my husband who had total knee reconstruction.

I just wanted to let you know that I am sending healing thoughts and hugs your way.  I am so sorry that you are having to deal with so much pain, & I pray that each day it gets at least a little better.

Take care,
Lorie

Hi, WhiteBeard!
I apologize for not posting in awhile. You were one of the reasons I stopped in tonight. I know how hard it is managing alone, but I hope you're starting to improve a little day by day. And I hope you're staying warm! I think I remember you keep your home pretty stable temperature wise, but if it's as cold there as it is here I hope you don't have to go out much. And that you didn't get too much snow!

I'm thinking of you and wishing for you warmth and healing with each passing day!

Thanks PALady you know we were suppose to get between one and three inches of snow friday night and Saturday, but instead we got between eight and ten inches of the nasty cold white stuff!  and to add insult to injury the temp right now at 10:20 PM Sunday night is  a whopping three degrees!  it did get up to 26 this morning and the temps have been falling all day!  I called up a lawn and snow removeable service to clear my driveway and shovel my short sidewalk and front porch. I remember as a kid doing a job like that for seve or eight dollars it cost me fifty this time and he used a bob cat to do the driveway, it was all finished in less than fifteen minutes! He wanted to put me on his list to automaticly come and do my drive when ever it snowed and then bill me monthly, but I declined, as I can not afford to spend fifty dollars to have it done each time, what if we have ten snowfalls like that in a month?  I definitely need to move!

Anyway I thought I had the fix in for using my mask and sleep apnea machine but last night I had some major problems with it and ended up taking it off and using just the oxygen via nasal cannula again, so it was not a good nights sleep last night! So today I have been modifying the plastic piece that I have for my neck to see if it will work better, and make it so I can again use my sleep apnea mask and machine.  As for the pain it is getting better I think, but it is really slow going and that burning searing feeling in the neck and base of the skull on the left side and into the arm is still a real killer! I know I just need to be patient, but that was never one of my virtues I guess!

You guys really are the best though! And again you have been there for me through a really difficult time in my life and I Thank-You all for that!

WhiteBeard,
Oh, I hope Chartreux's wish come's true for both of us (and probably many others on this boad wish the same re: snow amounts!), but I fear it may not as the white flakes are blowing around outside my window. I have to get to the mailbox today, my big outing for the day :-), as I've not been there in 2 days. I am so lucky that my cousin plows snow during the winter and catches the end of my driveway (where that big heavy, clumpy rock-like stuff is) every few days at no charge - except for a pumpkin pie now and then! (He just got one for Thanksgiving!) Do you have any neighbors or anyone with a plow who you might be able to barter with for an occasional plow? I know you're a great cook/baker, and you're probably not doing much of that these days, but maybe you could give IOU's? If you're like me, you don't need to get out everyday, so you don't need regular plowing like someone who goes to work. Look around your neighborhood and see who puts a plow on their SUV or has a snow blower and maybe you'll find a kind soul to help a kind soul like you!

I also hope you're staying warm, as I don't think we've got into the single digits (yet) but we're working on it. The wind chill is horrible, here, as it's blowing right off Lake Erie just outside my window. If you caught the weather channel yesterday and today they are doing live reports from my area. You can go on weather.com and see Mike Sidel's live reports on video if you don't get the weather channel and he's around my area, although right where I am I have lucked out with snow amounts so far - nothing like the 3 feet a lot of people around me got, and Buffalo got hit super hard last week. I could watch the band of snow blowing right on them from our local radar and that band didn't move for 2 days. All that needs to happen here is a change in wind direction and we get dumped on instead. It is too cold for CP patients, that's for sure! Way too cold for this early in winter! So I hope you're keeping your heat up!

Ok, I wrote a book, but I am thinking of you and hoping it warms up a bit from that 3 degrees! And, BTW, I back my car into my driveway, and leave it right toward the end, so mostly I just shovel a path from my door to the car (or sometimes I just put on my high boots and chug my way through and stomp out a path! LOL). Then I just have to get some help with that junk at the end, but if it's not too high, I use my car to plow over it a little at a time! No snow tires this year, though, and I've not driven since we got this winter weather so I hope my tires will hold out to get me down to the grocery and pharmacy now and then!

PALady
I do try and stay in as much as I can, I have Physical Therapy three times a week now, it is mostly massage and heat packs and ultra-sound with a few mild turning exercises of my head and exercises to build up strength in my hands. I still have major problems with the muscles in my neck spasming up and tightening up. Also problems with swelling especially where the muscles attach themselves to the base of the skull, and to the vertebra. This also causes terrific pain. so the Physical Therapy is a much needed and appreciated help in my recovery process. I just wish it would progress at a faster pace! Ha Anyway it is midnight and my outside remote digital thermometer is reading one below zero right now! I do hope this is not an example of what our winter is going to be like!

PALady Thank-you, for all your support, and Chart, Pebbles, Straydog, Dani, and all of you here on the CP Forum, I want to THANK-YOU for everything and just being there for me!

Dear White Beard,

I'm so sorry that your recovery has been so difficult! Muscle spasms can be so hard to deal with...you're definitley in my thoughts and prayers!

I don't live in an area where it snows, but I understand the issues of dealing with the weather when you're sick. I'm now living near the coast (CA Central Coast) because I can no longer tolerate temperature extremes (highs or lows). I hope you get a chance to move to a friendlier climate!

I have spent many years out in California,  a couple in Sacramento and then a couple more down in San Bernardino, and a bit later a couple of more in the Merced area. The nice thing about your area, if you want cold and snow, just go to the mountains, Lake Tahoe is a great place to go! and then you can leave it! smilewinkgrin   Right now our temp at 10:30 tonight is 4 below zero!  I actually drove to town this afternoon for the first time, and now I am really hurting, It felt good to get out and I even had a fast food cheeseburger and fries, that is a first for me in a long time and it was heaven. I am paying for my travels but it is worth it!  PT told me this morning that it is going to take a while before everything settles down and the pain lets up, but he said the incision looks good and it will just take time for the muscles to heal and the fusion to take hold. It is funny because the left back side of my head is still numb like when you have novicaine???? But yet where the muscles attach to the base of the skull it is swollen and burns and hurts like crazy! I would think it would be letting up pretty soon. I just did not anticipate it being like this for so long!   Anyway I really appreciate all the support and good wishes it is nice to know that people really care!
