Well after 10 years of headpain and every med there was, I am now on Subutex. I really thought this was going to be the answer to my prayers as i had heard so many good things about it. Sorry to say that 8 mgs-4x's a day does nothing for the pain and frankly I am at wits end. I was previously on embeda, 30 mgs twice a day and had gone up tp 6-8 norco a day. This was working but the neurologist freaked out saying I was going to overdose so my pain doc sent me to an addictionologist to try subutex and see if it offered any relief. Well its awful I am nausceous all the time, usually end up vomiting because the taste is so disgusting to me,, I can't sleep and when I do fall asleep it is impossible to wake up. I have been taking this for a month now and frankly am once again ready to give up. I am so torn. I have my norco in the drawer and am thinking I should just go ahead and go back on that but am fearful as to what the doctor would say if I did. I explained to the doc prescribing the subutex about the side effects and his solutions was to take more. I just don't believe he understands the concept of breakthrough pain. He has instructed me to stop my pain journel ( which the PM wants me to keep) saying it only makes me concentrate on my pain. This doctor told me that I need to get back to normal because this pain is really hard on my husband. Apparantly men want to be the fixer ( yes, i know we've discussed this) and the fact that he can't "fix" me is bad for him. Well does he think this is good for me? I don't expect my husband to fix me but I am not doing this on purpose and really would like to go back to "normal", whatever that is..This has been going on for over 10 years now. The subutex doc also has increased my prozac from 40 mgs up to 80mgs saying I have OCD and thats why I am journeling. If things aren't better when I see him in 2 weeks he said he wants to go to Methadone. I explained that I was on Methadone before and it did nothing but his answer was I just didn't take enough. He believes you take the pill once a day and that will be that. I try to explain the Breakthrough but he just doesn't get it.
Nows here is the even more frustrating delima.
The neuro wants me to take zanaflex and stop my ambien.
The pain doc says take the zanaflex but keep the ambien at 5 mgs instead of 10.
The subutex doc wants me to take valerian root, stop the ambien and take 80 mgs of prozac.
My primary doc, who has been with me since before this pain started and knows me best says she sees no problem with the norco but 6 at a max, to go back to the 10 mgs of ambien and forget the zanaflex and valerian. She is the one who knows me for almost 15 years now. She also says stay at 40mgs of prozac and that its not any form of OCD but rather me following the PM's orders to journel.
What it boils down to is I have 4 different doctors telling me to do4 different things and right now all the med changes have done nothing but make me sick and increase the pain and frankly made me miserable, physically and mentally and emotionally.
I don't know what to do and feel pretty darn lost again.
sorry but the vent but i had to get it out.

Oh wow...what a nightmare! I am so sorry you are having to deal with all of this. It seems as though you got some power trippin going on between your docs and you are stuck in the middle. I wish I had some wonderful advise to give you, but frankly I have no idea what I would do in your situation. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers and hope you can get everything worked out and get some relief soon.

Gentle Hugs,

about the only thing I can suggest is that you get in touch with your PCP and tell her what is going on with all your other doctors and ask her what you should do.

In all actuality your PCP should be acting as a coordinator, referee, etc when dealing with other doctors.

Wow.....Now that is insane!!!! And one of them things you are OCD???? Good Lord, what do they expect? You can't do what everyone says. It would kill you.

OK, it's time for a pain team management approach for you. I'd ask my PCP (who knows you best) to make the arrangements and have all the Dr's have a meeting on your case. They can discuss the "technical and medical" issues and you can provide the personal information. Something has got to give!! If they are unwilling to cooperate on the team meeting (even if it is video/audio conferencing) then I'd ask my PCP to find me a NEW TEAM of DR's WILLING TO COOPERATE on a patient's care. You may have to go to a teaching hospital or to a research hospital for this, but perhaps that would be best. It may work even better than the local team if your PCP would be willing to handle everything once the team had made the diagnosis and treatment decisions.

This is totally unacceptable medical treatment.

I'm with retired mom. Your doctors need a pow-wow. No wonder you're stressed out.

Wow!! I am so sorry for what you are having to deal with! Like Shannon said, it sure seems like some sort of a power struggle going on between you docs and you are caught in the middle! That really stinks! I would also agree that your docs need to get on the same page! Maybe your PCP could arrange this, because she seems to understand you best! I mean....if she could find out the reasoning behind the other medicine suggestions.... then together, they can come up with a game plan that work! Anyway....in the mean time....I hope you can find some relief!

Oh Cat, no wonder you are at your wit's end, no one should be having this sort of mess to deal with. Real bad ego's involved here it sounds like and a lot of the old right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. I am with the others, go back to the PCP and tell her just what you told us this is crazy. Perhaps she can get this taken care of with a new team that works with each other instead of against each other. So, sorry this has happened.

Please take care and keep us posted on this mess.
