Ok, so I was supposed to have a Corpectomy last Thursday at C5 and C6.  about 2 hours into the surgery, Surgeon was testing the stability of C7 to make sure it was strong enough, and in the process ended up putting his thumb all the way thru my vertabrae.  He went out and talked to my husband and ended up only doing basically another fusion at C5&6.  The original fusion  fused to 6 but collapsed 5. Now here is the really great part...Right now I am running fever, my neck is so swollen that my cervical collar is cutting into neck!  I know that he still cut the muscle and had everything "moved" over so he could do the other procedure, so I am basically recovering from 2 surgeries.  I called the doc about the temp and swelling and they wanted me to come in because his next appt if Fri, well MY appt is Friday and we are fixing to be right in the middle of a snowstorm.  My mother (who is staying with me) won't drive on ice or snow and my husband drives a propane truck and they are so busy with the weather that he can't take me either.  I guess what I am trying to get at is this......should I just closly monitor my temp and keep icing the swelling and wait till Friday?  I live over an hour from my surgeon, and a car ride even Friday is going to really hurt.   I just need suggestions and to know if anyone else has experienced these post op problems!

The Fever could indicate an infection, does this doctor have practice in the ER,
go to the ER where you can get him called to. I don't think you should wait this out.
Maybe call and see if you can get an earlier appointment or a cancelled one, so
you can be seen sooner.
Others will come by with better advice...

do not wait! is right. if you have swelling and fever go to the hospital. did you have a drain right after surgery? where you given an antibiotic after surgery? did they say anything about tylenol or ibuprofen if fever occurs on your discharge orders? DON'T WAIT, go back!

Go to the hospital asap!!! This is nothing to play with and the sooner you get help the faster you will recover. It may be time to lay down the law with your family and tell them to take you to the ER or to the surgeon NOW. People often don't understand how serious a situation can be until you are in it. Don't wait!

   Dear Crazy,

Hopefully by now you are speaking with your doctor and you are getting to the bottom of things. It sounds like many problems happened during your surgery. I am sorry that he ended up fusing them. I can tell from you post that you are sick and tired of extensive surgeries. He was honest about what had occurred. That is unusual in this day and age. I hope he still focused on your wellness.

When it comes to the fever... many things come to mind. First and foremost is urgent care. Especially if having a fever after surgery is uncommon for you. You never know for sure, so it is best to air on the side of caution. Also, on your discharge papers should be a list of "Warnings". If any of the warning signs are happening (they are) that would be even further confirmation that it is time to head down to urgent care.

I am a bit different. I have always had low grade fevers on and off through the majority of my adulthood. When I have any type of surgery or surgical procedure I run about 100 - 101 deg.. Even after all my eye surgeries. So, I usually have to keep my eyes peeled for a fever over 102 and any of the other warning signs. My doctors have never been able to figure out why I have the fevers one and off. Let alone after surgeries.  rolleyes

I hope you can update when you get a chance. You are in our hearts and prayers!

*hugg*

Given that you have both a fever and swelling you need to be seen as soon as possible, as the others have already said. Icing it at home and watching your fever grow is dangerous.
You really do need to be seen as soon as possible. When I developed a fever and swelling post op, it was an infection that didn't go away despite several rounds of antibiotics and you can't let this go. The amount of swelling you have is dangerous and needs to be decreased.

Well doc couldnt get me in and my fever finally broke.  I go see the surgeon tomorrow....taking a bag just in case.  Never know anymore when I will be staying at one of their first rate facilities!   lol  I appreciate all the concern and was ready to go and then all of a sudden, the fever and the swelling went down.  We waited a while and never flared back up, so I am hanging on till tomorrow...Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Well, went to neurosurgeon today, and come to find out all the fever and feeling crappy was a UTI!!!! Can you believe that is what caused all of the misery? Just this morning I noticed a little urine that was pinkish, and by the time I got to the dr is was bright red "things" floating around. They sent the lab results to PCP and he prescribed Nitrofurant 100mg anyone else ever been on this and does anyone knw what two expect

Oh goodness, I'm sorry that I never thought of that. I had a UTI after my fusion too because of the lovely nurse that kept telling me I didn't know what I was talking about with the catheter out of place. Thank God my cousin (also an RN) was there to take care of the catheter problem. Althought it was very embarassing at the time to have my female first cousin take care of me in such a physical way, it was a Godsend to have the catheter correctly placed.

After clearing the UTI, you should feel amazingly better.

All my best!

Wow, I just read your post and I cannot believe what you are going through! Your vertebre just basically desolved? Oh man, that doesn't sound good. I don't have any suggestions for you, as I don't have much back problems. I just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Take care.
