I know this sounds wierd but for the past several months my tongue has been coated and it hurts in the middle. It feels very tender like I burnt it but I didnt.

Any ideas???

Hi Rhonda...

I wish I had an answer for you but it's not something I've had before. I would make sure your dentist and/or doctor take a look at it. From a little bit of reading, most of the conditions that cause the tongue to be coated are harmless, just an over growth of a natural substance on the surface of the tongue. Please get it check out though..

My first guess would be thrush if the coating is white (yeast), and your doctor can prescribe something to take care of other. Other than that, I'm not sure.

I think Thrush is a good suggestion. I'd look it up online at a reasonable site such as MayoClinic to see if the symptoms are similar. I'd always be sure to follow up w/my Dr....no matter what. Nobody here is a Dr and cannot accurately diagnose anything.

Best of luck!

I had this for a few weeks, it was a reaction to a painkiller, completely harmless and the pain stopped after a few weeks, i still get a bit of coating but its not as bad i just had to adjust. Not sure if this would be the same for you but hope this helps.

Thank you for your responses to my post! The rheumy examined my tongue and knows about the pain. He never really said anything about it but I will bring it up Friday when I go back for my test results.
Thanks again!!!

Hugs!
