i have (along with many other conditions) osteosporosis and osteoarthritis, actually the osteo's came from other conditions such as ddd, neuropathy, fibromyalgia and a few others i cant remember right now. i have tried several of the medicines out these days for the osteo's and have never been able to tolerate them. at the beginning of my injury (1989) i was given Nasaids, and several different kinds, i have only had one cup of coffee this am and cannot remember the names of most of them, one is Celebrex, anyway those types of meds make my stomach feel like i have a steel band around my stomach, i have made sure i have eaten before taking the meds, which my doctor advised me to do but still was so uncomfortable i couldnt move. i take 300mg neurotin for the fibro and that helps alot.  i also take calcium and many vitimans.  every time a new nasaid comes on the market, i willing try to take the meds, at this i would rather take my chances with the calcium and vitamins then the be that uncomforable. i am at a time in my life that my pain is being manage as well as it can be and i am not going to take anymore meds that keep me bedridden. hoping all are having a low pain day, and wondering if anyone else has a problem with antiinflammitories.

NiNi53 I have osteoarthritis and have for years in the most of the joints. You know this condition is plain old wear and tear. Had I known a lot of things younger I probably would have been more careful with my body and probably could have prevented some things from happening. The worst of it is in my back, neck, both knees and shoot anywhere it can get, lol. My next thing to replace will be both knees and I am holding out for those as long as I can. But on days when they hurt I sometimes think my time may be getting closer than I want it to be. I have reached a point in life with so many surgeries that if you take something out, you will have to put something back in, I am out of the spare parts, lol. I cannot take NSAID due to crohns disease, no steroids anymore either. For you, steroid injections may help, Radio Frequency Ablation where they burn the nerve ending by radio frequency, it is not permanent, the nerves will regenerate and it can last up to a year in relief if it works, heat & ice is another method. There are many over the counter meds and different rubs, like BenGay, Tiger Balm to name a couple. If you will google osteoarthritis you will find a lot of self help info too.

You also said you have osteoporosis. When were diagnosed with this? Do you have the report to tell you what level you are at? When was your last bone density test? Is there a reason your dr did not put you on a prescription medication for this? The meds to treat this is to help slow down the disease progression. You really should be on medication for this and you need to get your dr to rx something. I have it and have lost 2 inches in height because of it. My dr did not bother to put me on medication when I was first tested & dx'd and that was so wrong. I should have been on medication a lot sooner than I was, my new PCP was the one that picked up on it.

Take care.

Hi Nini I can't think of anymore advice than what Straydog has already given you. I use the BenGay, TigerBalm over the counter and Voltaren Gel by prescription. I also am on the Fentanyl patch and oxycodone 5mg. I sure hope you get some relief from some of the pain. I was put on a med for osteoporosis when I was with my last pcp and I told him that i couldn't remember to take it the way that i needed to. I asked if I could do the once a week kind of med instead of once a month. All he did was continue me on calcium and vitaminD. I do advise that you get a med for the osteoporosis and also take calcium and vitaminD to help your bone's strength.

You take care and I hope you're having a low pain day.

love and hugs

hey there, a supplement company named Jarrow makes a combo product called BONE-UP and ULTRA-BONE-UP. it has a highly bio-available calcium called microcyrstalline-hydroxyappatite. since my mother has used it the bone density scans improved slightly. it also has a good anti-inflammatory property.
