Burton, once man’s best friend, on others his cares would depend.

He wastes his days in an eight by ten cage, a sad story for someone his age.

Food and water is what he will get, along with a poke and a whack on the head.

Dare he growl dare he bark, only if he wants to be hit where it won’t leave a mark.

This lesson he learned for sure the hard way, the day his dignity was taken away.

It wasn’t always like this, once he was young and healthy and met with a kiss.

But life did him dirty, he came up lame, after that life was never the same.

Life goes on for those who keep up, but not if you’re a three legged pup.

A sad story this would be for a dog indeed, a poor creature who found himself in need.

What’s this?  Burton, not a dog at all, but a man who could have been named Tom, Tim or Paul.

Would you believe his name’s not even Burton, that’s just what she called him an incredible burden.
