just joined today.
I was diagnosed with L4/L5 Disc bulge with probable L5 nerve root impingement.in 2008.
I have just had a serious bout of Sciatica and have been laid up in bed for 3 months unable to put any weight on my right leg because of the excruciating pain radiating from my back to my foot. I callled out 2 emergency doctors and an ambulance all to no avail.
The emergency doctors would only prescribe ibrufanol and paracetamol. I pleaded with them to take me to hospital but said as had been diagnosed there was no point.
As I had taken to my bed or should I say the spare bed I was reliant on my parner who also went out to work and didnt get home til 6 in the evening. To put it mildly I had a pot to urinate in as i was unable to get to the bathroom, I washed myself down with baby wipes, My hair remained unwashed all that time. and was getting gradually depressed.

Last Tuesday I felt able to get up but my legs didnt work after lying flat for 3 months, I crawled downstairs [ I have the friction burns on my knees to prove it]
After 2 weeks i am gradually regaining my strength, but feel utterly let down that I had to cope with no real pain relief and no one really believing me.
Iam 56 year old woman who had to give up working as Deputy Manager of a Childrens Nursery
(edited for eaiser reading, and gave you a topic) Thanks! SE

I believe you Minkey> (love your name!) but you need to get up and get moving around or you are gonna be in a lot worse shape than when you 1st went to bed!!
Now I'm no Dr. and I probably shouldn't be telling you what to do, lets just say I'm suggesting! I've been dealing w/ a bad lumbar spine since the mid 80's and from my experiance I can tell you that staying in bed is not a good thing!!!! I know it hurts like hell but if you were diognosed and had an MRI> You didn't say, then you have to strengthen your back muscles not let them waise away to nothing! There are many muscle exersises you can do while in bed!
This is just my opinion and I'm sorry if I pissed you off on your first post! Yes back pain is horrable! If you have never had any serious pain in your life then all of a sudden are exposed to it, you feel like you are gonna die> I know but you aren't! So get to the shower my new friend and wash your hair, you'll feel much better let alone how well that hot water will feel on your back!!!
Good luck Minkey, I really hope you get some relief soon!
When I was young & stupid I broke almost every bone in my body and I'm paying a heavy price now but I'm still here and so glad to see my two sons grow up to be fine young men, both are in the Navy. I'm so proud! My biggest health problem>> I'm a certified Luny~Tune!!

Oh poor Minkey.
We can't treat you, but we do care. I hope you find suggestions here that will help you.

It might help to call the doctor who diagnosed you and ask for some physical therapy or other treatment. Here they sometimes try spinal cortisone injections after trying physical therapy.

My first line of treatment was physical therapy, which did help, but was kind of a waste of time and money. I was instructed on exercises for core strengthening and mostly just did them at home. A lot of them are just leg lifts and such, done lying down.

Thank You to Pete trips again and Alcie, for the advice on my L4/L5 disc Bulge and the awful 3months I have just had. Yes Pete I am up now but left with a terrible fatigue and cronic backache every time I start to do something. I have made an appiontment with my GP and will insist I am referred to a neurosurgeon and physio.
I did realise that I needed to move about but every time I put my foot on the floor I had what seemed like an electric shock down my let I was crying out in pain which is not like me as I have a strong pain threshold.
What made me so mad was I was given no effective pain relief if I had I would have got up sooner. I do not want to go through that again and will be putting in a formal complaint to the appropriate people. I would not let my dogs suffer let alone a human. Will keep you posted as the outcome with my GP. Thank You
