Hi Everyone

On Monday I need to call the knee doc that is 2 hours away.  My knee is really bothering me today.  The oxy and vicodin arent cutting it.  My incisions are healing but the glue they used to anchor the steristrips itch so bad.  i am having a reaction to the glue.  As the strips curl and loosen I have been cutting them shorter and then i can scratch that area and wash it and it is fine.

My tibia is a little better pain wise, it is down to a 5 today but knee is up to an 8.  Ouch!

I have a flexible blue ice on my knee and elevated so that is all I can do for relief.  I am taking my meds,  I will touch base with PM doc on Monday also.

Hi Betsey...sorry to hear you are having a bad day...It was only just a few days ago on the 22nd you were having a 3 pain level and doing well:(..

Have the last few days been more busy with bending of your knee? I think it's pretty normal to have some waxing and waning days of pain during a recovery after surgery...Especially when you have a great day like a 3 pain level...then we tend to do more, and then this would cause more pain...

So...I'm not sure if the Dr. is going to want to up your pain medication at this point since you are having some really good days as well...but obviously you can share all of this with him...but just wanted to let you know in case they don't change things...as most of us who have had surgery have had the good days/bad days depending on activity level and healing...

When are they wanting to start you on rehab/PT? Probably after a few more weeks I would think...

Hopefully you are using your wheelchair as much as possible to not be putting pressure on your knee right now...and then keeping it elevated whenever you can..

Sorry it's not a good day:(...We are rooting for you that tomorrow will be a better one!..

Thank you Snowbunny and Paula

Paula...I dont know of another brand of steristrip that doesny use glue etc. Hopefully they will be all gone in a few days.

When i had a 3 pain level I wasnt increasing my activity. i just have bad days with my knee. I will continue my lack of activity until I talk to PM doc and knee doc next week.

I have PT on July 6 for 3 weeks. 3 weeks wont loosen the muscles enough. i am so frustrated with my trauma surgeon i could just scream.

Just FYI...lots of times you can go for the weeks of PT that you are covered for and they can show you many of the things you can continue to do at home with stretch bands, walking, etc....

And don't forget aqua therapy will be very good for your knee/leg in any pool outdoor/indoor...

After my 3 surgeries...I did that all those times...I had a few weeks of PT and then did most everything at home the following weeks..

I have 3 different colored stretchy bands that are of different 'strength' to use..

So I don't think it would be wise to forgo all of the PT just because they aren't continuing longer...You can also try to get an extension if the Dr. writes for it and it's covered...

PT is a crucial part of recovery...and most PT's are wonderful about teaching you during those weeks how to do things for yourself...

I know you are frustrated and hurting today....that happens as I mentioned during recovery...good days/bad....and our emotions can also be all over the place after a major surgery as well...so...maybe just try to rest this weekend....talk to the Dr. on Monday....and just take it one day at a time...

Sending you hugs (( ))

Speaking from someone that has dealt with lots of steri strips in the last few months they do become very itchy and icky just to put it blunty. My husband had me pull his off of his knee, against the dr's advice of course. these are meant to fall off on there own. His still were not falling off after 2 weeks. But a little vitamin E oil around the edges tends to help the irritation and makes them loosen quicker.

Good luck!

Hi Betsey,
Did you have knee surgery or replacement? I've had both knees worked on with orthoscopy and
if it wasn't for the IceMan machine it would've been a lot worse. It velcroes around the knee and
sends ice water in a wrap to surround the knee. I got it with the first knee, the second one the
dr (a different one) did the surgery and sent me home without crutches or a machine. Just told
me to put ice packs on it. It is NOT the same, because with the packs it only hits one section
whereas with the machine it covers most of the knee at one time. The crutches helped a lot until
I was able to balance more. I had PT with the second surgery as it wasn't healing (the doc forget
to tell me when he did chrondoplasty that with it the longer you've had arthritis, the longer it is
to heal...for me it's 50 years now.) Mike, the PT guy was awesome and explained why the knee
wasn't healing and worked with me to straighten the knee out. Because I was limping for so long I
could no longer work the muscles to straighten it, it was becoming atrophied in a bent position.
It was alot of work but after 3 months of severe pain I was able to return to work.

For me I found I am allergic to the glue on the strips and also to staples that they use. Luckily, they
used regular stitches for my knees. Good luck.

Hi Betsey I'm so sorry that you're having a bad pain day. I hope that your pain is better by now. It's so frustrating when the pain increases so much, and you haven't done anything to cause it. Here's some very soft hugs for you (((((((((((((Betsey))))))))))).

You take care and keep your leg elevated as much as you can.

love and hugs

Betsey could you use a dab of a of steroid type cream on the spot that itches from the glue? Another thought if the itching is really bad is take some Benadryl.

Hope this gets better.

Hi Everyone

I am allergic to benadryl,so what is new. My strips are off...I couldnt stand the itching it was waking me up and it was worse than poisen ivy itching. Now everything concerning the incisions feels calm.

My knee...behind the knee hurts...I hope it isnt a bakers cyst. The tibia feels better, pain is at a 6 in the tibia bone.
The knee pain is at a 7 when it is elevated and not moving. when I am upright and trying to move with the walker the knee pain goes to an 8 .

I am continuing my meds of oxy and vicadin. I plan on calling PM doc and knee doc on Monday. touch base with them.

My leg is swollen so I guess it is the lymphedema acting up. I will take a water pill on monday to see if it helps.

Everyone thank you so much for checking up on me. I really appreciate it. This group does understand my lack of sleep, pain, appetite changes, and maritital issues.

soft hugs

Hi My Family

My PM doc called me back and told me to increase my oxy 20mg by one tab in afternoon. Dont increase vicadin, so I take that every 6 hours for BT.

I spent the day in bed and my leg isnt as swollen as it was yesterday. My knee isnt excruiaying now it is at a 7 from an 9. Yep a 9. Tibia feels good at a 5.

I called about getting a cleaning lady in here for an estimate. 4 rooms plus powder room. What do you think the national wardebt will be to clean the 4 rooms? I never had a cleaning lady I need dusting and vacuuming and sweeping floors and washing kitchen floor with mop and decluttering.
I need help

Hey Betsey..I'm glad that PM was able to give you more pain relief....and adding another 20mg of Oxy should be a really good bump and hopefully help...

I just want to say to be careful if you pay for someone to come in...they need to be bonded and insured if it isn't just someone like a neighbor or church coming to help for free....If money exchanges hands...if they aren't covered and they slip, fall, or injure themselves in anyway...you can be liable for all damages....So you need to request to see their actual papers for this as most everyone who is a true business and have this covered...

People make the mistake thinking it's covered by homeowner's but it isn't when you are 'hiring' someone to do work in or outside your home...Unfortunately in this day with the economy so bad...there are some dishonest one's out there that do this kind of thing regularly to collect money...

I use "The Maids"...and I'm just outside of DC...and it's about $135 for 4 people for about 1 hour and a half...(they always send 4 people and then just charge by the hour)...and that pays for cleaning a 3 bedroom home, two full baths, living room, dining, kitchen, kitchen dining area...

I also wanted to say that since you are having so much swelling..just to be sure you are drinking at least 10-14 glasses of water a day as well as lowering your salt intake to as little as possible....those can at least help or not add to any swelling that you may have..

I hope you can get some rest tonight and that the extra medicine will help you a lot:)....

Just checking in as well...I saw your other post that you were up till the wee hours this morning...but hope you finally are getting some sleep...If the Dr. just upped your Oxy dose by another 20mg....it may take some time to get into your system....

That is wonderful that he did this instead of just raising your Vicodin, as that is less strong or effective than the Oxy...

So I hope it starts to give you some relief soon and get you back to the 3 pain level that you had a week ago:)

Here it is thursday....I called knee doc that is 2 hours away-talked to his nurse about my appt being the day before thanksgiving and that I dont think I can hold off for that length of time. Told nurse of my pain on my knee at an 8 and the meds that I am on. She told me to elevate and apply ice and call PM doc. Also, if I need to see knee doc before nov all I have to do is call and rescedule my appt to an earlier date. that satisfied me.

i called PM doc and explained that the oxy 20 mg 3 times a day isnt relieving my pain. I am hovering at an 8 after 5 hours elapsed after taking the oxy. The doc will call me back. Hopefully before the holiday weekend.

My neighbor made chili for us for supper tonifght. That was so sweet of her and I really appreciate it.

I will keep you appraised of my situation.

Thanks for the update...I hope they can move your appt. up from November...

I might be confused...but didn't the PM just raise your Oxy from 2 to 3 times a day?...And sorry if I got that wrong...I was thinking you said he was allowing another 20mg tablet in the afternoon just a few days ago on the 28th....

So, I know it's hard sometimes...but it may take a few days for the medicine to start being more effective, especially with long acting medicine...it builds up in your system when taking it spread out 3 times a day....just wanted to say that he may want you to see how it goes after being a week or so on the new dosage....

Have you spoken with the other Dr. about your pain getting worse? It seemed like you had had some days on the lower dose medicine where you were at a 3 to 5's...And now you are on a higher dose but your pain keeps going up and up to the 8's....

I would be contacting the knee Dr. to ask if there is something going wrong...

I hope that your PM can help you and that you can rest this weekend with your knee up...Enjoy the yummy chili tonight:)...Hopefully some neighbors will also bring over some 4th of July food or your hubby ends up cooking out some burgers and/or corn on the cob...that's what I am craving...LOL

Sending you some hugs (( ))

pm doc told me to take vicadin one every hours and keep oxy 20 mg 3 times a day. I dont think that is going to relieve my pain but that is what she said so I will do it.

Everyone have a great holiday weekend.

I was looking ar my newest script for my oxy that was given to me at my last pm appt. She wasnt counting on me taking 3 of them a day so i went thru my existing supply faster than she anticipatated. She wrote on the script not to be filled before 7-6-11. I will completely out of the oxy by monday. On tuesday I will need to call pm doc and get a new script that will accomadate my 3 pills a day for a month. I will need to pick up the script once it is written.

I really hurt tonight and it is 2:45 am and I am wide awake. My back is killing me at n 8 and my leg is a 9. I took my meds and it will take 1 hour to work.

Tomorrow hubby will so burgers on grill and corn on the cob. Yummo!

Any ideas on how to relieve my pain with my limited pills.
