Sorry for being gone again. Computer got a miserable virus, worse than last time. We have no idea where it came from but it hijacked my computer, got into the root on the hard drive and was trying to populate through my drivers. Once it gets past the operating system there's trouble. Luckily a full day of scans with specialized software and my grandson had it cleared out...we think. I had put on more protection after I had this problem several months back but it still wasn't enough.

I still have a few programs that don't open, like Adobe Photoshop Elements. Strange thing is that this virus was hiding files in an Adobe folder. I use this almost daily and I'm stuck without until one of the guys takes the time to fix it. But at least I can get back onto HW and not worry that I'll go down again.

Glad to be back with y'all~

Hi there Chutz! I was just about to put up a thread for you as I hadn't seen

you here and wanted to make sure you were doing ok. Don't you just hate

computer problems. I hate not having my laptop. Hubby just bought me a new

one and is programming everything on it, although he is having some

difficulties, but in the mean time i am using his mini laptop. Gotta have that

puter, it's my lifeline. LOL.

And how are you doing healthwise? I hope you are having some better days.

How is the weather your way?

Look forward to hearing more from you and having you hear with us. You are

always  missed when you are absent my friend.

Take care
Suzane

There was an article a year or two ago where a computer hacker said that Mac op systems were easier to hack than Windows and that the only reason you don't see or hear about Mac getting hacked more is because there are relatively few in use worldwide when compared to Windows based PC's.

People who write and intentionally distribute these viruses view them as a weapon of mass destruction and want to deploy them where they will do the most harm. It is like someone who builds a nuclear bomb and they have the choice of detonating it in LA or a town in the middle of nowhere with a population of 500. Which one do you think they are going to choose.

Given that Mac computers are targeted a lot less it does make them a more "secure" computer in that sense.

I do have a question about Mac computers.

Can you run Windows based programs on them or not? I have heard it both ways.

absolutely! requires software to do so though. I have,... and still do run both PC's and Mac's. Both good machines, and each has pro's and con's.....but if one was to do a lot of surfing, then a Mac would be my prefrence by a long shot. no worries about viruses at this time with them....but yes it is possible.

We added three of them three yrs ago, and not a single problem concerning viruses or other problems for that matter. Our Pc's were in the shop all the time multiple time a year. Because of the business nature we had....I think we had five of them running all the time. (PC's)

Tablets seem to be the wave of the future right now! Really....if I had my way..I would be off the grid completely. wink  ....and gossip would be from the old Party Lines we used to have. Not sure you young ones would remember that though!

Glad to see you got it all worked out Chutz! Computer viruses are such a pain! It takes so long to repair the damage and sometimes those little buggies get so deep into the machine that they ruin it for good. I lost my Dell to a virus that apparently came in a forwarded email from a friend. I have even gone to opening emial on my Iphone and deleting the forwarded stuff from there....since it's an Apple product. It helps to keep them from infecting my only other good machine at home. My others are suffering from too much wear and tear.

Along these same lines, I have to ask a very BIG favor of anyone from HW who does have my personal email. PLEASE do not send me any emails that you have not personally typed and PLEASE do not forward an email to me from someone else. I have had several emails (forwarded) that contained viruses and it takes soooooo long to get everything back in order. I've asked before, but people forget and it only takes one :(

Best of luck to you on having your computer problems behind you. If you have AT&T, you can get a really good tech support system (with real, honest to goodness people) for $10-$15.00 a month. I've used mine several times because of the dreaded viruses.

Good luck on keeping your machine "well"!!

Thanks for all of the kind words. I live in a home with a husband who's been programming these things for a living for about 35 years, a grandson who is Cisco certified and a hardware guy and then there's me. Grandson runs a Mac with 3 operating systems on it, a laptop that is older than he is, I'm sure...lol.. husband had w computers running all of the time and two others part time. Most in windows, one in Linux and I have no idea about the others. And I'm here with the leftovers which are very good though.

Husband is the only one who hasn't gotten a virus of some sort, grandson has had many and I've had 2. I do visit a lot of sites mostly for quilting and photoshop related information. The guys go to the end of the internet and back again. (did you know that there really IS a site called The End of the Internet?) theendoftheinternet.com/

Anyway, I personally think if you are online enough eventually you'll pick up something that's meant to do harm to your system. It's a shame that these brilliant minds can't put them to good use instead of destroying other people joy. They must lead very miserable lives if that's all they have to do. Just my take on life today...

I have installed newer adware and malware detection and hopefully I'll be in better shape here. Took me over 18 years to get the first virus, many of those years teaching computer drafting. Guess I'll just take my chanced. Besides, it's a good learning experience for grandson who tells me he can fix anything. So far, so good but we'll see...lol

Welcome back Chutz. It's so good to see you back my friend. It's such a pain. I do wish all these brilliant minded people would use them to help people, not to take away our joy.

I just got an email from Ebay telling me that my account was trying to be hacked at by three places overseas. Sometimes I just want to scream stop!!

How is your pain doing these days? Take care. I hope you're having a low pain night.

love and hugs
