What a difference a week makes!  This time last week, the pain had really started escalating and I didn't know if I was going to make it much longer.  I give all praise to our God for giving me the presence of mind to go on to the E.R. on Monday morning.  I was not going to make it much longer, and I certainly would not have made it to my PM doc in Chattanooga.

I had surgery to remove a carbunkle from my upper left thigh/lower buttock and to remove a staph boil from the left side of my torso.  These two removals left holes in my body that could easily house a golfball (torso) and baseball (buttock/thigh).  I am now on a wound vac to remove any possible remaining infection and to start closing the wounds.  It is our prayer that I will be off of the vac in 3 weeks and well on my way to being normal.

My medical team ROCKED while there.  I normally HATE this hospital and wouldn't go there, but beggars can't be choosers.  I'm actually very glad with my choice and pray this means that our little hospital is coming around and moving up in the world.  My Hospitalist happened to also be a customer of mine.  He really spent some time with my husband and I coming up with a plan to try to irradicate these infections that I continue to have.  He gave us a pretty extensive list of even the little things that we need to do/stop doing.  Basically, habits that we need to change.

My pain levell in my hands has been on the increase with their increased need in aiding my movements, but they have stayed with it and have helped manage it, along with the surgical pain, beautifully.  I actually feel about 80% better than I did this time last week.  I am encouraged.

Thank you for all of the prayers, messages, thoughts during this time.  God is absolutely awesome and, again, HE gets all of the glory for my recovery.

I'll update you all again soon.

Cathy

That's great that you are feeling better Cathy. Sure hope you continue on this healing path as you have suffered quite a bit. Hoping that the vac does the trick for you. I have looked after many children who have had the vac for large wound infections, such as a spinal fusion, and it did work well, although it takes quite a bit of time as you mention.

Take care and keep us up to date on your progress.

Cathy,

I think you've joined in the time I've been gone dealing w/ health issues; anyway, it's nice to meet you.... and I am glad you are having less pain - that's always a good thing! I've been trying to read posts and get caught up on the forum, but my energy is still low so I do a little at a time.

While one of the forum rules is not getting too much into the "religious" thing....I am a Christian, and I know I wouldn't be where I am at w/out my faith. Also, judging from your username, I take it you also homeschool. I've homeschooled my kids for 12+ years now. Two of mine are in school at the moment, due to my health - but my 11th, 10th, 7th and 6th graders do their school at home and are involved in co-ops w/ other kids.... and then I have "surprise" 11 month old twins. I was healthy all those years of homeschooling, until 2004 (except migraines).... then my world caved in. I don't know how I do it; I just take it day by day and do the best I can.

Anyway, it's nice to meet you; and I wish you low pain. Keep us updated.
Hugs, Tina

Hi Cathy It's good to hear that you are on the road to recovery. What a difference a week can make. Faith does make a big difference when we go thru chronic pain everyday. I know I've cried out many times since that day I fell in March 2001.

You take care and rest. Keep us updated on how you're doing.

love and hugs

Thanks everyone! I am in much better spirits. I have caved to taking a pain pill this afternoon, my "hindend" wound is killing me. I probably let it go too far but I absolutely HATE pain meds. I know, I know, I am on PMT and HATE pain meds. Oh, but I do hate the way they make me feel...but I don't like the pain either. **thought derailment...I just realized that the pain from my infection/surgery has been so bad that I haven't paid too much attention to my hands. I have to laugh now...**

Mom of 8, yes ma'am I am a home educator. My caboose will graduate in December and turn 18 in January. My oldest is 21 and the beautiful bride to an awesome young man and mother of 3. I am blessed beyond measure to have Leigha (3), Blake (2) and Haden (4 mos) in my life. I never knew love until I knew those grands! My other child is another boy and he will be 20 in November. All 3 are/will be graduated homeschoolers and are/will be attending college.

I was so relieved to have found a pain forum that I "skimmed" the rules...but will have to agree that my faith is the only thing that gets me through day by day. Through Him, and Him alone!

Glad to "meet" another home educator!
I am unable to come up with a clever signature. I don't even really have a true diagnosis. I am on percocet and robaxin for chronic hand pain. So, in lieu of a dx and all, I'll just say that I am the daughter of an awesome and mighty KING, THE King of Kings and it is only through Him that I am allowed to live each day.
