Hello all,
I just received my first denial for social security disability benefits. My attorney is filing the appeal for me. Any experiences with this process and how long I can expect this to take? My family is really suffering financially from my inability to work and I was wondering if I was going to be able to hold out or end up homeless while I wait...

Hi BadHeart, this is the usual thing that happens so please do not take it to heart or feel that you are being singled out.

The next step is the atty asks for a Reconsideration and he has 60 days to ask for this, however, most do this immediately and not let the 60 days get close before filing for it. Usually he will hear something and of course you too, about 60 days after he send in his letter. if you get turned down for the Reconsideration and most do, that is when he can ask for a hearing before an ALJ. Its all done in steps and you can't take a short cut and leave one out.

The atty should be able to give you an idea on how long it takes to get a hearing on your claim. It seems to vary from state to state on how long before getting a hearing.

So sorry that you were denied bu that is normal for SSD-don't give up that is what they are hoping for.

You might want to talk to your attorney about applying for Supplemental Income through social security while waiting for those rusty wheels in the disability area to creak along. Whether you qualify or not will depend on your family's complete financial picture is.

You can look up the requirement online on the SSA website and determine if you do or might qualify. From what I have been told it can be a lot easier to get than disability.

Hi I got my SSI (Supplemental Security Income) the second try. It was much easier than those that have applied for SSD. I didn't qualify for the SSD because i didn't work enough to get enough credits or whatever they're called, so you might want to see if your family's income qualifies you for it. I wish you the best.
