So, I was headed to a dentist appointment to have a tooth check out. It had been bothering me since he pit a tiny filling in it several weeks ago and it was becoming an annoyance. about 2 hours later I came out with a completed root canal and am getting the destroyed crown replaced. Not the best way to start a day especially when living with chronic pain is enough in itself. But, this dentist is a wonderful person and he tries hard to keep me as comfortable as possible.

One thing I do, sort of unconsciously, when I'm in the dentist chair is to close my eyes and have other, more fun things to think about. Several times I've almost fallen asleep doing this. When I was very young I can remember my mother having to pull me out of the back window of the car to drag me into the dentist office. But in those days they WERE torture chambers. Plus, that dentist was such a dork!...lol turn

What kind of a dental patient are you? Do you have good or awful memories of going to the dentist as a kid? For some reason the word dentist strikes fear into many people. How does it affect you?

As a kid - I was fine. Just went in for cleanings and such. 1st cavity was @ age 17.

As an adult - I now FEAR the dentist. I had to have a root canal years back - and it was right after it, that I got my first case of meningitis. Not fun, let me tell you.

I also have to take prophylactic antibiotics because of my heart issues....

So, for me - I am scared to death that even a routine cleaning or simple dental work will put me really sick....

I hate going to the dentist. I mean, I really hate it. I love my dentist though:)

When I get any work done, even a cleaning, I cringe and make faces, so my dentist is always thinking I'm in pain even when I'm not! It's terrible.

It's the noises that bother me. Ever since I've had CP, I've been very sensitive to certain noises, the drill and other instruments being some of them.

The only part of going to the dentist that bothers me as a kid was getting a shot before having a filling put in. To me the shot hurt worse than anything else and after that first time, when I was about 5 or so, I told my Mom and the dentist both no more shots. After that no problems going.

To this day I still refuse to get shots to have a filling put in. I do accept them however for having a tooth pulled or anything more "invasive" than a filling.

The last dentist I used hated needles himself and had an extra understanding of how they could hurt so he would always spray the area with a topical pain killer before giving a shot. It tasted bad but worked great. Once he sprayed you wouldn't know you had been stuck.

Well this topic is good or bad for me this week. I went to the dentist on tuesday for my cleaning,

had xrays and found out i had an abscess. Had to go back yesterday for a root canal. I was not happy

and very anxious. And in a month I need gum graft surgery and scared about that because the last one i

had done in dec. i was in agony for a week. It doesn't matter how much orthodontic work i've had done in the

last ten years I hate going. As soon as I walk into the office I feel sick. I don't know if any of you have

noticed but i notice a dentist office odour which I can't stand. Hate the sound of drilling. I always tell her to give

me tons of freezing for anything i need done, just like yesterday. My hygienest is the sweetest and goes slowly

as my teeth are so so sensitive. My orthodontsit is also the sweetest and has even done a lot of my work at no cost,

such as braces for the second time, gum grafting, xrays, etc. I have always hated going to the dentist, as far

back as i can remember. I also get the topical freezing so you don't feel the needle prick, but it is when

the freezing goes in that hurts so bad.

As a child, my appointment were like what Momto8kids, always cleanings
then I needed braces and they had to pull a tooth for those and I'm missing teeth
so anyways, I now have to have the laughing gas before any fillings or they
won't be done as they won't be able to touch me...I so don't like the dentist.
and orthodontist I just don't believe anymore not after what they did to my
daughter, I should've sued the orthodontists...I have a good case...they
are just out for money, in my opinion.
anyways, I didn't mean to get off topic...well wishes to all

I am with Tina, have to do the antibiotics before dental work for heart problems. I am scared to death of dentists and they are afraid of me., lol. I freak out and my BP shoots way up high and I get red in the face and break out into a sweat. I get so stiff with fear in the chair that it is like my body is torqued in the chair. The dentist is constantly stopping and asking if I am ok.

Two years ago, I went to one dentist and he looked at at my medical history and said he was afraid to take me on as a patient.

I really do hate going to the dentist.

I am definitely scared of the dentist. As a kid the dentist felt like he was shoving the needle up thru the top of my mouth. Now I have had to have dental surgery to cut teeth out and am due again for the same. I haven't been in years, and can't see myself going until I'm in some pain. I hate going to the dentist.

everybody take care.

I'm not afraid of the dentist, I'm afraid of the chair!

I was fine as a kid til some mean kids litterly pushed me over and made me fall about 20 feet. Since then, I have became terrified of the motion involving falling.

This poor dentist has drugged me to the bone in sedation, used laughing gas and still saw his instrument tray fly when I reflex to get the hell out of dodge. He finally one day asked me why I'd only freak out when he moved the chair. I told him "because I'm scared of the chair not you. I was involved in falling from heights as a child and I'm scared Im gonna fall". After that we found a rememedy.. no sedation. Its simply me standing til he puts the chair how he wants it then I get in it so I dont have to feel the motion. Hope I made you laugh!
