I went to my ortho appt today.  Doc came in shook my hand and had eye contact with me.  He looked at my xray and said "I see why you are having pain in that leg".
He said that he never had a patient with a true nickel allergy.I told him well your looking at that patient.  I have a bad nickel allergy.
He can give me aknee without nickel but I might not be a ble to bend it beyond 82 degrees which is what I do with my natural knee.  I might still have to use narcotics with the implant he said.

So I scheduled March 30 surgery and I want to tell him to open my leg up and evaluate my knee and then look at the implant.  See which one I would have a better life with.  Xrays dont show everything.  I want him to evaluate what he sees.  If he places the implant in my leg he will place a long rod into my tibia not a short one.  He will use myincision on the left side of my knee and then go across to the midle of my knee and then straight up my thigh 7 inch long incision.  No staples...Im allergic to them...Sutures are in order.

So I trust him but there isnt a guarantee that I will be any better than what I am dealing with now.

Love you Guys

I have been reading up on knee implants and the different company names of knee impkants.

Also the questions a pt needs to ask when considering a knee implant.

You know what scares me the most? The 10 inch long incision up my thigh. Why cant he do minimally invasive techniques? I will ask him that. The doc really needs to look over my allergy report

I am worried that my implant. wont bend over 82 degrees but maybe it wil straighten out completelyand have less pain then what Ihave been enduring for the last year.

Thanks for allowing me to vent

The doctors nurse called me yesterday. They want me to stop by the office to pick up a disk that is cobalt chromium. Place it on my forearm for 24 hours and see if I have a topical reaction. If I do then they will order a titanium knee for me.

Does titanium contain any nickel?

      Morning Betsey!

I have cut this metal for 35yrs, and there are different blends of Titanium. Some do contain nickel, but Titanium in its pure form does not. Also, Titanium in its pure form is non-magnetic

Stainless steel is the same!....some contains nickel...and others don't. The magnetic field are the same for stainless...some is magnetic...and others are not. I have cut about every type of metal you can think of as a machinist....some of them exotic...and one that can be deadly if you cut yourself with it. (Beryllium Copper) Titanium is a very tough metal, and extreemly lightweight as well. Stainless is also very hard, but weighs quite a bit more compared to Titanium.

...as a side note,...I have seen people buy BBQ grills made out of stainless, only to see it rust a few months later. Yes!....there are different grades of Stainless!  rolleyes

I have provided a site here for you...take a peek at it. The question is a good one for those who are allergic to some of these metals.

Well, today i had NO reaction to the cobalt metal disk that has been taped to my forearm for 24 hours. So i will be getting the Stryker knee...Golfers,marathon ppl get this brand of knee. I am happy!! Doing Happy Dance!!!

So In 5 Days I will buy my airplane ticket to my house in Fl and stay there until March 4, 2012. I dont want to be in PA during the snow and ice. Hubby will join me on Feb 8,2012 and stay with me until 2-28-2012. We have to board our 2 shelties at a womans house for 30 dollars a day.

I am excited about my knee implant even though the ortho doc isnt hopefull about it but Im a redhead and we react differently. I will do just fine.

Im looking forward to being in Fl. I have friends down there.

Love the thrift stores downthere to

Everyone have a good night.

...sorry your hurting Betsey. Are you using the Oxycontin as a BT med? ...and will it give you enough relief for 12hrs or so? Maybe the Florida trip will help a bit...with warmer weather.

oxycontin is the only med I take. 10 mg twice a day.

Warm sun in Fl will make everything feel better. Plus I have a 6 person hot tub on the lanai. that will help me.

the 2 person hot tub we have at our house in PA is very difficult to get in and get out for me. Plus you freeze by the time you exit and get back inside the house.

Thanks for replying to my post

Betsey, your surgeon was very honest about how you may or may not experience an improvement, but all of this sounds like really good news. There's a chance it will help, you'll get PT post surgery and hopefully that will improve your function. Pain is of course the thing no one will predict, but we are all hoping for the best!

I hope you have a WONDERFUL Florida trip. You deserve a break and not not have to deal with the snow and ice!

Heather lynn

I am hopeful about my surgery and I will try my best to do all PT as they tell me to do.

I will fly out of Baltimore nonstop to Ft Myers airport. It only takes 2 hours.

As soon as I get my w/c settlement check and I bank it then I can purchase my ticket and Fl here I come.

Heather...I was diagnosed with fibro and for 15 years I had endometriosis then when I reached 42 years old I got a hysterectomy. Dont regret that one bit.

Thanks for posting in my subject

Well, my right knee which is the good one, is killing me. The left side of it cant have any pressure on it. My pills arent taking the pain away. I called my ortho doc......nurse returned my call, Im over using my bad knee and the right knee is over compensating for the bad one. Apply ice....I applied frozen peas....pain!!!!!.....applied heat....awwwwwww!! That felt good.

I am waiting for my w/c settlement check to come. I hope it comes by friday. I need heating oil for the house.

My lawyer said that my disability check will increase because of my settlement so that will be appreciated.

everyone have a low pain day
