Hi everyone. I am looking for a place to vent first of all, then I hope to share experiences and learn from others' trials and tribulations.

First some history. Long list of injuries. A bad motorcycle wreck in 1975, whiplash injury in late 70's from driving a forklift, then totaled out my pickup in 1993 thanks to a nasty combination of rain on black ice. Very luck to walk away from that one but then, within a couple of weeks, everything good in my life took a bad turn for the worst.

And so it has been. I had seen a chiropractor in the 80's for the whiplash, which helped a lot over the years, but there was no help after the auto accident. I had a spinal fusion at L3-4 in 1995 but it took darn near an act of Congress to make the doctors believe me. Anyway, things went well for a few years but it didn't last.

Being the active and hard worker that I am, or was, I worked and played too hard and eventually had a couple more disks bulge/rupture, to the point that I could only stay upright on my feet for a half hour or so. That got progressively worse and by 2002 I could no longer work in my construction trade.

Trying to keep this brief... over the last several years I had another back surgery, Oxycontin pain control, then ultimately my implanted intrathecal morphine pump. Now even it has begun to lose its impact. I was told I could have my fusion removed, then re-fuse 4, yes FOUR, levels of my spine. Thankfully my pain specialist said "Oh no you don't" because the thought of it scared the hell out of me!

So where do I go from here? I have no idea other than request another increase in the morphine rate. I have also had to deal with sleep apnea, Bell's palsy, and low testosterone - in addition to rapid weight gain that I have been told is related to the apnea and low T. I am also now on a CPAP machine and testosterone injection, in addition to aqua therapy. This really sucks! What else can go wrong? idea

Hi Ouch, and welcome to HW.

I'm glad you've found us, but sorry you've had reason to.

As far as your pump goes, does it only contain morphine? I wonder if your docs can add another med in there to see if it will help. I have a pump to deal with both muscle spasms and pain... mine contains a med called bupivacaine, which I believe is commonly combined with morphine in the pumps.

I'm sure the others will be along to welcome you soon. In the meantime take care,

Hi Ouch and welcome to Healing Well's chronic pain forum. I am sorry that you have to be here but happy that you found us. After reading your story sounds like you really have a lot of different issues going on.

When is the last time you have had a complete change of medication in your pump? I have a combination of 4 in my pump. I could not tolerate Morphine in it. I wonder if you have built up a tolerance to the Morphine of if you just need an increase in the pump.

Wow, a 4 level fusion, talk about turning your back into a broom stick, that would sure do it!!! I don't blame you for declining that surgery. I think I would go in and see my pump dr and talk about trying something else in the pump. There are a lot of different meds that can be used in them.

Please keep us posted on how you are doing.
