As promised, I'm giving my update on my transition to melotonin from ambien. I'm down to 5 mg per night now (from 20 mg for years). I have upped the Melotonin to 6 mg from the 3 mg to help with the transition. Dropping to the lower dose this week was noticable for the first night (for sure) but since no problem after the first night!
I'm soooo happy with the change! I hope to be completely done after this week and away from that script completely. I have a ton on hand from when I was taking the 15 (and they were giving me 20 mg per night). It was they way my Psych wanted me to fill it, so I would never have a time when I ran out. He's a wonderful guy! Now I have too many left over and HOPE I will be able to just let them run out of date and dispose of them. We shall see, but it's looking like it might be a really good change.
On another positive side, I was listening to DR radio on sattelite radio today and a caller asked one of the psych's about melotonin. He said it was perfectly safe and that it was actually good for the brain, causing relaxation and obvious benefits to the user. He did say that they had done brain scans on the users of all kinds of meds and gave some good and bad reports. I don't want to fully quote here, since it would not be eithical, but some of the meds I take were there and WOW was I surprised about what he had to say. One in particular was the xanax I take. He said it made the brain look just like an alcoholic's brain. That one freaked me out!!
I don't know his name, but it was on about 8:15 AM EST on DR Radio....XM Radio. If anyone is interested, perhaps there is a way to do an internet search. I believe the Dr's are with NY University, but I'm not certain.
Have a great week everyone! I'll keep you updated on the change again when I get off of them completely (to see if I can do it)! I hope to be there by next week.
