I don't know if I am posting this in the right place or if there is a right place but since I don't know if it could be related to my cronic gouty arthritis or not and it's the second time it's happened to me I figured here may be as good a place as any if there is a better place for this post I hope somebody can redirect me. thank you.

The other day, this is probably the third day since it began, i started getting a sore spot behind my right ear it began to spread the next day leaving areas of the side of my head tender to the touch. The next day i noticed it spread while i was asleep to around my temple leaving the skin reddish and swollen and this morning I awoke with it covering my whole cheek as well and the redness had gotten darker. Also the whole time i have been running a fever of 99.9 to 101.9 and I read online that gout can cause low fevers but where does low end and medium begin I don't know. This is beggining to get painful and worriesome but I don't have insurance or anything to see a doctor because apparently a lazy guy that got bit in the head by a dog when he was younger is more eligable for disability than a guy with permanent joint damage from cronic gout attacks... Welcome to America.

Any help on this subject would be appreciated. thank you.

Hello and welcome.

You are in a wonderful place, with very caring people.  None of us are Dr's, but we have almost every chronic pain condition out there and try to help others like ourselves.

Let me first start by saying that weekends are the slowest and responses are much fewer on the weekends.

On the subject of seeing the Dr....I don't think you have a real choice...and the sooner the better.  If there is a low cost/no cost clinic near you then pleae try that first.  Second is the immediate/managed care clinic.  Then there is also the ER.  I would use the ER last, unless you felt your condition was beginning to be life threatening.

Most dr's will even give samples of medications if you just ask and this can offset the cost of the visit.

I wish you all my best!

Hi.....

I'm sorry for what you are dealing with - especially with having no insurance.... That being said (and - as RetiredMom said - we aren't doctors) - but especially with a fever that is over 101F... I'd definitely say you need to go in and be seen. Especially w/ the redness and swelling.

Take care, and I hope you feel better soon.

Please go to the ER. The symptoms you described could be related to your gout, but also could be a few other things - from the easily treatable to something more serious. I know what you mean about the financial/insurance issues - I'm basically living in the same world - but this is your health, so what's one more bill, right?! :-)

yeah well the problem with that is the last time i went over to the ER here they were rude to me like it's my fault i can't afford all the sugeries and medications i need to be halfway healthy... also today the fever broke it's been 97.5 - 97.7 most of the day so i am going to give it another day or two to see if the swelling goes down too before i give them more reason to look down on me and treat me like filth for reasons beyond my control... i will post back if there is a change or i go to the ER after all... thanks for all the help and concerns

well i just woke up and figured i'd update my status: the fever is still gone (97.7F) and the redness has turned to pink but i can't tell a change in the swelling my fiance is a nurse and said to hold off on the doctor cause of the recent changes... weird though cause how fast it was getting worse that it'd pull a 180 so fast

Hi Spazz, and welcome here.

I'm glad your symptoms have improved since you first posted here. I would consider a low-grade fever up to maybe 101F, a high fever over 102F. Redness and swelling indicates inflammation - with or without infection (and both can cause increased body temp).

Do keep a close eye on it as red, swollen areas of skin that spreads- especially with a fever - can be caused by things like cellulitis... though hopefully with your fiance being a nurse she would recognise those signs.

Take care

thanks for your time... sometimes i guess it just helps to get it off your chest and talk about it
