If anyone has had a disc herniation at L-2/3 could you share your symptoms with me. There isn't alot of information regarding a herniation this high in the lumbar area. The doctor was surprised that I skipped L-3/4 right above my fusion, he said it is normally the one right above that goes. Guess I do tend to be a little odd at times, lol.

I've been having some new issues for some time now but just blamed it on facet syndrome or fibro. I new the disc was bulging but with a new MRI shows a herniation with moderate stenosis. I had the cd of the MRI films and it was very plain even to me that there was a herniation, there was alot of disc oozing out down along the vertebra. I didn't see the report until yesterday at my doctors apt.

I've been having new symptoms but just blame them on one of my many maladies but maybe they are from the disc getting worse and causing nerve issues. I will have nerve blocks done on both sides Apr. 2 to see if this improves things. So anyway, if you could send out your symptoms I'd appreciate it.

Hi Jag.

I have been having lots of pain in the front and inside of my  thighs going from my knees up to my waist and then around to the center of my back. I seen the surgeon a couple of weeks ago and he said the  nerves was impinged at L3 and L4. He originally said he wanted to open up the foramin at L-3/4, well after he reviewed my MRI further, his nurse called and said he wanted to do more and she made me another appointment ( the 30th of Mar.) so he could explain exactly what he wanted to do and how. She told me that he wrote that he wanted to do a framinotomy  at L3 and L4 and a far lateral diskectomy. Anyway I will find out more the 30th and then decide if I want to go through with it and when I want to schedule the surgery, I am also checking out the possiblility of having it done in Lexington Kentucky, as that is where my sister lives and all her family, and then I  would not have to go through that alone, like I did my last surgery on the back of my neck at C3/4. Anyway the surgeon also said my reflexes in my legs was really messed up. ( he told me my entire lumbar spine was a mess, but L3 and L4 was the absolute worst and need the surgery now!)

I don't know if that helped any, but what type of symptoms are you having and how is it affecting you?

I wish you well Jag and let me know if I can be of any help to you!

Back at ya, WB

I agree that you should have more help this time. The lumbar surgeries are much worse than the cervical. What the heck is a framinotomy? Never heard of that one. Your situation sounds scary and I hope everything goes well for you. Let us know what you find out on the 30th.

I was having deep achy like nerve pain going down the back or side of my right leg (it couldn't make up it's mind). Sometimes it would go down to the ankle. At my last PM visit I requested a trigger point injection into a muscle spasm in my right flank area, well it missed the spasm but it stopped the stuff going down my leg, so I was happy about that. I've never had leg pain before. Also, my legs will feel heavy and my feet are so stiff. After sitting my feet hurt so bad when starting to walk but they do get better after I get going. These symptoms have just started the last few months. My PM said that it may be polymyalgia rheumatica symptoms. The only thing that helps that pain are steroids and I'm not ready to go back on them yet.

Wish doctors could do a spine replacement like they do hips & knees.

You have always been helpful WB and I respect your judgement! Thanks

Hi Jag I have had some pain go down the outside of my leg usually it hurts or shall I say really aches right behind the right knee on the back right side, but nothing like you describe, that sounds really miserable! You know the sad thing is if they do have to do a diskectomy and fusion at L2/3 then that is really going to put all the pressure on L3/4  because didn't you say you had L4/5. fused already? I know  the doc told me C4/5 will not last on me because it as all the stress with above and below being fused.  It is to bad they just won't do them both! Has the injections helped other than what you mentioned?  I have had a serries of three epidural injections at L3 and I have had only minimal relief from them. I sure wish you well Jag, I do know that the leg pain your experiencing can be really bad, and steriods do help the pain but that stuff is really a double edge sword and can have some really nast side affects later on.

From what I have been able to research  the Framinotomy is when they surgerically remove the bone around the framemen where the nerves pass through to decompress them, but from the nurse said he wants to open up both L3 and L4 and then do a diskectomy there too? This surgeon is really good about explaining things so I will be happy to see what he says when I see him the 30th. Right now I am down in Kentucky and today I went to the VA hospital in  Lexington, they told me it would take up to four months just to transfer my record down there from Illinois and get a doctor assigned to me. That is to long, so I am going to check out just using the civilian doctors down here in Lexington. I do know that this surgey is allot more involved and difficult compared to my cervical fusions. And I do know that you know all that first hand!  You have been through allot already Jag!  I really appreciate your your posting, I know I can alway count on your support and advice, and that really mean allot!

Please take care of your self and keep us informed on how things are working out for you!

Your not alone in this Jag we are all here with you and have our support!
