Was I dismissed or ignored or just forgotten?

I called my nose doc's office 3 or 4 weeks ago after the nasal spray antihistamine didn't have any effect on my 3-year sinus headache and infection (CTs, MRI, and a bunch of cultures).  I didn't get a return call.

I forgot about that because the headache was worse than usual during today's visit, even though I returned a couple of the samples he had given me.  He carefully looked through my records - a big folder after 3 years' treatment, including sinus surgery, but not fixing the deviated septum.  He gave me yet another sample of a slightly different steroid sinus spray.  He ordered another steroid that I can't buy because it's not covered unless he orders it directly by mail order.

Then he made no mention of a return visit.  I was so bummed by yet another waste of co-pay and 100 miles of driving, that I didn't think of rescheduling myself.

I've been thinking of finding another sinus doc.  But there aren't many around, and he is actually very good, caring, knowledgeable and a very competent surgeon.  But is he finally bored or frustrated with me?  I'm not much fun when I'm in pain, and today is bad.  (all my other conditions are acting up in chorus)  I'll try the new samples of course, and see if I get a call about the new med order, and I'll look for a second opinion.

Doctors are people too and sometimes things can slip their minds.

Sometimes office procedures change in between visits and no one mentions them to us because by the time we return it is old news to the staff.

For example...for years after seeing my PCP I would take a paper up to the front desk that would list everything from when the doc wanted to see me again to tests that needed scheduled to the level of visit I just had, etc. One day my doc had to kind of rush out of the room at the end of our visit due to an emergency call and I did not get my paper. I stopped at the desk anyway just to let them know they needed to see the doc for the paper and if there was a next visit to call me and schedule it. It turns out the office went 100% computerized and the
"paper" was now done on the tablet pc the doc had been carrying around for years.

I think you should call and leave a message for the doctor, and hopefully he will
return your call..if not the yes maybe think about another doctor and you might want
to ask about your cultures and what came of them or if they got losts...
Have they ever drained your sinsus??? or thought about a brain scan to make sure the infections
are not coming from somewhere else....You have a lot to think about...Hope things work out for you,
Many well wishes and sure hope your feeling better soon....

Chart -
I didn't have any cultures this time, not even a really good examination. Doc was running an hour late, as usual, so my Sx were just normal for me, I guess.

Previous cultures came back H pneumoniae and a few other bacteria. MRI was a brain scan read by neurologist, showed frontal and maxillary sinuses completely blocked ... again. Antibiotics for 10 days always bring relief, but only temporarily. Last year when I was in hospital for nearly a month on IV antibiotics for appendix and then ruptured sigmoid, I was "cured" for a month. But it came back.

Today my cheeks are red. I feel a little warm. I'd cough, but had polio and don't have that reflex. Lungs are congested. I'm trying the steroid spray, jumping through the hoop again.

I would just like to share with you that I had a sinus infection for years on and off about 25 years ago and kept going to ENT's and had no significant changes with their treatment.  I finally went to an "infection control specialist" doctor and he put me on an antibiotic for three months.  I think it was Bactrim or could have been Cipro too, but it did the trick.  I haven't had a significant sinus infection since.

Look for one in your area.  Call the local hospital and see if you can get one from them.

Good luck and God's blessings.

Linda, thanks for the tip! I'll call my PCP. I think he knows infection people at his hospital. If not, the insurance will be able to help me.

I can't take Cipro - allergic, but can take Bactrim if I cut them in half and take QID with food. I'm not sure if I can stand them for 3 months, but it's worth a try to get rid of this headache and green glop in nose all the time.

This might relate, in 1996 I kept testing positive for strep, not the fast test one but the longer test,
so January 1997 the ENT took my tonsils out, two months later I was still testing positive
for that same strep, and keep testing positive for that strep, so in August of 1997 ENT
drained my sinsus, sent them to the CDC for cultures, doctor put me on an IV antibotic
for 3 weeks (had a nurse come to my house) and I've been doing good since, However,
now anytime that I do get sick with strep Amoxicillin won't work to clear it up...only Cefprozil...

Look into the infection people like Linda said and I hope they can finally give you something
that will get you cleared up...many Prayers and well wishes...

Thanks for the story Chartreux.

Today I have a slight fever, worse headache, more green gunk, feel like I'm getting pneumonia. I got hold of my PCP last night, started Amox-Clauv. I have to cut those in half too. I mentioned infection specialist, but he didn't answer me about that.

I'll call the ENT when I get a break in the babysitting. The 4yo is on Amox today. He had a bad fever yesterday. I had to cut a fraction of my Tylenol, crush with jam. Mommie couldn't get home with med until 8PM. I suspect we're sharing germs. He's got mono. I hope I haven't caught that. My oncologist did blood work last week. I'll call him too. I'll bring up infection specialist with them too.

I sure hope the doctors answer you about an infection control physician.  It's worth it to have another Dr. take a look I think, if nothing else.  You have been sick a long time and these bugs hold on even when we think they are gone sometimes.  But that is the nurse in me thinking that way. lol.

Seriously, I am praying for you.

God bless.
