Hi need some guidance . I am 6 mnths post op from hernia repair. I am so swollen that I cannot do my pants up. I have gone from fulltime hrs rto 2 days per week and I am failing miserably at 2 days. I have gone back to Dr's several times and they just shake their heads. I have two huge very distinct lopsided bulges. I did not have these before. Can anyone out there tell me if they have experienced or know someone who has experienced something like this.

Hi Patti, I would urge you to find out what type of mesh was used for the hernia repair. I live in Tx and there has been commercials on tv about some of these causing people medical problems. I am not saying this is your situation at all, but it is something to check out. In fact, if you would do a google search I feel certain you could find out what ones I am talking about.

Have you considered consulting with another surgeon to get another opinion? That would be my first move. If you need a referral your PCP should be able to assist in this. Sometimes hospitals have a referral line with drs listed and you might try this to find another surgeon. I would also call the facility where you had your surgery and obtain a copy of your medical records of the surgery. A new dr will need to see those to know what type of procedure was done, thats real important to get.

Before I get ahead of myself any further welcome to the chronic pain forum. Please keep us posted on how you are doing. Take care...Susie

I would suggest you get another opinion like what Straydog said...and if that's not possible then
go to the ER and see if someone can help you out...You need a doctor as soon as possible on this
so call one the first chance you can get....keep us posted as we do care...concerned about you as well...

Hi Susie thanks for your advice. I have asked at least 4 times for my operative report and He will not give it to me. This procedure was paid for out of pocket. My husband and I both feel like there is something he doesn't want anyone to see. I have left another message for this Dr asking for help. I will call again Monday. If he refuses AI may seek legal help. Having said all that it does not hepl me deal with this constant pain. It tires you out mentally and physically.
Too young to feeling so old LOL
Thanks again for your advice I will stay in touch.

Patti as I suggested contact the facility where you had your surgery, they will have a medical records dept. You are allowed to obtain a copy of your medical records and they will probably charge you a small fee for copying the records which is legal. I would not bother asking the dr for a copy of the records, thats like beating a dead horse, just contact the facility directly. If asked why you are wanting the records, just say they are for your own personal file.

Before thinking about legal help, you need to get in with a new dr to find out what is wrong. I would not even mention to a new dr that you are considering legal remedies as that will scar any dr off and no one will want to touch you. The important thing is to find a good dr that can see what is going on with you and what it will take to make you well. It could be something like you being allergic to the mesh that was used, who knows. But, please be very careful mentioning legal help to any dr, including the one that did your surgery. You never want to tip your hat, it can come back and bite you later. I worked in the legal field over 20 yrs and we did handle medical malpractice cases and they are very difficult to prove up.

Again, I would not bother calling this dr and asking for the records, just contact the facility directly, less stressful. Take care....Susie

Straydog is correct.  Call the hospital and ask for the operative report.  You might have to pay a tiny fee for it.  I did when I had major surgery but it's always good to have it in your files.

Do you have a fever?  I'd watch for that, too, as that might show an infection starting.

Hi Sherrine .There is no fever. As of today I am off work indefinitely. I am a medical Secretary for 3 Dr's. My Family Physician says today she thinks that the mesh is attacking my body and it needs to possibly come out. Not what I wanted to hear. But now we are moving in the right direction. Thanks for your post. I appreciate all the advice I can get.

Patti, I am so glad that you got in to see your family physician today even though the news may not be so good. But, regardless they have to get you back feeling good and find out exactly what is going on. Is your dr going to send you to another surgeon or what?

Please keep us posted on how you are doing....Susie

I'm sorry you are having to go through this but it can be taken care of and you will feel 100% better in the near future.  At least you are not at a stand still now.  That can be so frustrating.

Let us know what you do find out because we do care about you.

Hi , I went to Dr yesterday and they decision was made I am done working indefinitely. I was making myself crazy trying to a hero. Going backwards instead of forwards. I am now applying for cpp. I have been referred back to a surgeon on an urgent basis. My dr thinks the mesh is attacking my skin tissue . Break down going on. Hence intense swelling and pain.Laying low and waiting . Filling out paperwork. Hoping the gov will see fit to help me financially. So the ball is rolling.
Thanks everyone.

Unfortunately they referred me back to the same guy.I called their office to f/u today. Secretary told me I will not be seen till fall. Unacceptable. This guy wrecked my tummy and now ignores me . It is shameful.I will call my Dr's office tomorrow to tell her to forward ref to another surgeon.Enough already.

Unbelievable, I can't even think as this has me so mad for you...I sure hope they can get you on with another surgeon
and soon...this run around is horrible, make sure to document everything even your phone calls, start making a
paper trail so you can win against this first doctor...Hope you can get seen soon by someone...
Many Prayers being sent to you....

Hi Susie & co I called my Family Phy and I am now being referred to a surgeon I found online. He works at Brockville Gen Hosp which is 1 hr from here.I looked up his reviews (all good) and I spoke to his secretary at length. She feels confident he can do right by me. He can also see me by the end of May . Much better than Sept/Oct. I hope you are all having a great day. The sun is shining here in Moscow ,Ontario.Actual sat out and tanned this afternoon.
Thanks everyone for your ongoing encouragement.
