I have had this test. try not to cough or sneeze during or after or you can get quite a nasty headache. Other than that the test itself is not that bad.

scorpio-girl Welcome to Healing Well Chronic Pain forum, I have had a couple of myelograms and one was on my cervical spine but they inserted the dye by injecting it in my lower back in the lumbar area and then lifted the foot end of the table up so I was strapped to the table and was just about upside down to let the dye run down my spinal canal to my cervical spine and then they tool the x-rays of my neck. It was not the best experience I have had but with the damage that I had in my neck and the pain I had, the test did not seem all that bad. ( I had a massive herniated disk at C6/7 with free floating fragment s in the spinal canal) The other one I had done was of my mid spine, but that time they sedated me and then done an CT scan after taking all the x-rays. I had problems with lower back pain and severe leg pain from that one and they had to give me a large steroid dose to get the inflamation down. Anymore they don't do that many Myelograms because the MRI is so much better.

I wish you luck scorpio-girl and hope it all works out well for you! Again I Welcome you to our forum

thanks for the replies. white beard, on the cervical myelogram, what was the problem with your neck and what corrected it?
Did you have a problem with your balance/equilibrium and a slow gait? Presently I have no pain, just symptoms of a compressed nerve in the neck.

scorpio-girl on the first time when I had the myelogram I had a massive herniated disk with free floating fragments in my spinal canal at C6/7 My main complaint was pain in my arms like when you hit your Crazy bone (elbow) really hard. I had it in both arms and hands and it would not go away, also some swallowing difficulties. But no balance problems or gait problems. That was in 1985, and they did a ACDF ( Anterior Cervical Deskectomy and Fusion) Then in 2009 I started having similar arm pain in my left arm and the disk above it went bad and I had another ACDF at C5/6 Then in 2010 I had to have another fusion this time  it was the articular joints in the back of my neck at C3/4 went bad and they fused them together and put rods and pins in it. the main symptoms  I had with that was really bad pain in the upper neck and the lower back or my head.

When I had my other myelogram it was in 1999 I was diagnosed with a herniated disk at T12 and it was causing me severe lower mid back pain and pain in my waist area, they would not do surgery.( the hardly every do surgery on thorasic disk because it is so dangerous) so it ended my nursing career and I was put on disability and treated for chronic pain. I am now looking forward to more surgery at L3/4 I am being sceduled to see a surgeon as I write.

scorio-girl I do have problems with my gait and balance and I use a cain, some doctors say  they think I might have MS but others say it is all because of my spinal problems. I have also lost some strength in my arms and my legs and I can not position my arms in certain positions, (example  I can not hold my arms out straight and put my palms up????)

Have you  had an MRI of your neck?what makes them think that it is a compressed nerve in your neck? unless they think it is the upper neck regions? I will be interested to hear what they find, If you are having problems with your neck please be careful! Especially if it is affecting you balance and gait, as you might be prone to falling and that sure would not be good if the problem is in your cervical spine! So untill you find out what is really going on, Please Please Please be carefull!

When is your myelogram scheduled??
