I have posted my story on here before.  Basically, I'm 35 years old, suffer from three levels of cervical disc disease and SI joint dysfunction.  Anyways, I've been medicted incorrectly with short-acting medication for the past eight to ten years.  My ortho doc passed me on to a pain mgt. doc a few months ago and I'm scared to death I'll mess this up as I see it's the "end of the road" for me.  I was on five Norco 10/325 per day up untl last week.  The pain mgt. doc put me on Opana 10 mg twice a day.  I've been nauseous and haven't even noticed a difference in my pain control.  He prescribed Norco for breakthrough pain but the pharmacy won't fill for another four days because I'm too early as a result of the last doctor not prescribing adequate medication for me.

Anyways, I called the pain doc today and he said he wants to switch me over to the Fentanyl patch and I really don't know if I want to go to something that strong.  I always really enjoy the hot tub for my muscle spasms and read you can't use the patch in a hot tub and/or long, hot shower.  I'm pretty nervous about the whole thing but feel like if I don't go along with his program, he'll kick me out and I'll be really screwed.  Ugh....

Any advice?  Anyone on the Fentanyl patch and happy with it???  Help....

Well, I decided to call the office back and tell them I'm going stick with the Opana to see if I can get used to it. After reading about the Fentanyl patch, quite honestly, it freaks me out and I think at this point I'll deal with some side effects and/or mild to moderate pain instead to chancing some of the things I've read about. If anyone has any advice to he contrary, please, please let me know; I'm all ears!

I'm on the Fentanyl patch and sadly, I hate it.

Ask your doctor about the BuTrans patch. I was on that one and it was AMAZING. I had no side effects and was much better off in the long run! With the Fentanyl, I have quite a few side effects and it doesn't last the whole 72 hours.

Good luck.

Current Medication: Generic Fentanyl 50 mcg/h patch every 72 hours (feels ineffective after 48), Meloxicam 15mg once a day and Generic Tylenol for breakthrough.

StarMama I think you have a plausible reason for not wanting to go on Fentanyl patches and new dr or not I think you should be honest with the dr as to why you don't want to be on them, Honesty can go a long ways with a dr plus it shows you trying things on your own to help knock the pain down. A dr should never fault a patient for trying to do something to help with the pain like getting in a hot tub when it helps. I have a jacuzzi and hated not being able to get it in it because of the patches because it does help with the spasms.

I hope the side effects settle don for you, get something for the nausea and take it about 45 minutes before you take your pill.......Susie
