I just recently had surgery & am taking Tylenol w/ codeine for pain. What happens if I become pregnant while taking this medication?

The FDA has placed codeine as a pregnancy category C drug. It is not known whether codeine will harm an unborn baby. Perhaps you should make sure you or your partner use protection until you no longer need the codeine.

Hello Nonrh!…and Welcome to the CP forum!

We have had at least two or three members go through pregnancies full term while being on pain med's. One of them is a moderator here, and I will send her an email about your question here.

Again Welcome, and keep checking this post for more replies.

Take care,

Are you taking pain medication on a short term basis because of your surgery? Or is this something you are going to be on long term?

Obviously.... the ideal situation is to not get pregnant until you are off any avoidable medications. While I know too much about having a pregnancy while on medications - it's NOT an ideal situation and should be avoided if at all possible. It can cause a lot of worry.... babies can get addicted to opiates in utero.... and so forth.

That being said, can you have a safe pregnancy while on certain medications? Absolutely. There are "safer" ones than others... you need to be w/ a high risk OB.... etc.

I have no problem sharing more, if you would like more information. Just want to make sure I understand your situation before I do though.

If this is a temporary situation.... then I'd definitely advise trying to get off the meds before getting pregnant.

Take good care.... if you want more information, feel free to ask. --Tina
