I thought I would check in and perhaps my progress will encourage others who will or are going through a similar surgery. I had my 11 week check-up and X-ray yesterday. And even though I have severe osteoporosis I show signs of fusion at a normal rate! I had been so worried that I would not fuse normally and yet I am starting off well. Compared to a broken fibula (small fracture) that took me 3 times longer to heal. Needless to say my husband and I are very happy 😄
To get to this place I have been wearing a hard collar 24/7, rarely went anywhere in a car, went for 2-3 mile walks daily, have not eaten much due to swallowing difficulties but been supplementing my diet with whey powder and vitamins. I had been pretty depressed up to this point due to the pain, isolation and inability to do much. I also wear a bone fuser 4 hours a day.
I still have difficulty swallowing. My doctor told me I will be fatigued for awhile longer and to expect continued shoulder (trapezius pain) for a long time. I still take 1-2 Norco a day, but my doctor wants me off them ASAP.
I am now in a soft collar. Only have to wear hard collar when in car or doing strenuous or risk of falling activities. And gradually over the next 3 months transition out of collar.
Hope this helps someone looking or dealing with this surgery.
