Hello,

I had one of my "spells" where I get disorientated and managed to fall on some steps and suffered a calcaneus (heel) fracture. Oh well, might as well add to all the other pain :)

At the ER the nurse told me I could take the "boot" off at home if I was lying down which I'm told by ortho was completely wrong, it always has to be on so for 4 days no wonder I was in complete agony!

Ortho put a bandage on then a soft boot then a larger heavier boot on, oh boy does this hurt.

Anyone gone through this type of injury?

I have crutches and have to keep foot off the ground, pain is awful but I do have vicodin.

Is it normal, probably silly question, for this pain to be worse 6 days later? never had a fracture before.

I was told to ice and always elevate foot then put boots right back on.

Thank you for any advice.

Goodness I wish everyone would stop falling down so much. We bounce more when we are kids hehe. I remember when I broke my ankle how painful it was and it seemed that it hurt more a week later than it did when I first broke it. The doctor said this was because when the body suffers an injury, it actually sends out things to sort of numb the area, hence the swelling etc. so the body can start to heal itself. Then when the swelling starts to go down, the nerves come alive and the tissues etc. etc. and they say hello, just thought I would remind you that we are still broken.

Now I'm not sure if that makes any sense but that's what he told me. Of course I was on some good medications at the time so I could have been hallucinating. I just know that the pain tends to linger on. I broke my ankle about 20 years ago and it still hurts on occasion.

Hi Lynnstar and thank you,

Sorry to hear you're still experiencing pain from it after so long.

Yes, what you're saying makes perfect sense.

I just wanted to make sure as with the other pain problems my Dr ignored the worsening pain so it all got much worse.

Hope you are well :)

Oh foot pain is the worse! Or at least it ranks way up there with spine and dental pain!

I've got a total of three breaks in my foot. All the left. In retrospect, it's probably related to the dang foot drop that wasn't taken seriously.

Anyhoo, for me it was metatarsal breaks (the first -- which is totally weird and hard to do -- and of course, the favourite fifth!)

I recall when Hubby brought me into the ED the 2nd to the last time and I was in agony.

I was told by the ED doc that "it's not uncommon" for people to recover from (the type of fracture I got) in 2 weeks time. Yuh-huh.

But I must say, never, ever, in all my falls, tumbles and excursions, have I ever broken my heel. So I don't have much advice to offer you there. But I can say that in my experience, anything relating to my feet,....well forget about it!! Too painful!!

Sorry Thundercloud about your additional pain. Lynnster's explanation helps me understand better.

I had a torn tibial tendon surgery after walking on it a few years. Surgery also involved rebuilding the ankle bone so I was in a cast with no weight on it for 12 weeks. I got to use a knee walker-similar to a child's toy where they push off with their foot while the other foot is riding on the toy-only my knee was riding. It got lots of attention and worked great for someone not coordinated enough to use crutches.

Hope your heel heals quickly.
Sleep Apnea
Posterior C3 - C7 laminectomy and fusion 2 rods and 10 screws, local bone graft from surgery site-lamina and other bony tissue.
Knee and foot surgeries.
Cataract surgery x2. Felt that I was looking through water post-op. Floaters.
Breast cancer, mastectomy & tram flap reconstruction.
Thankful for my husband of over 40 years

Thanks everyone, means a lot.

Sorry Merrida and Abilene for you foot woes, I hurt just thinking about them!!

When I'm in the kitchen I put my left knee on top of a chair and scoot along, thank God our kitchen is small :)

One thing, again last night the pain was unbearable, all over my foot and toes, then it felt as though there was water in my foot if that makes any sense, just a strange sensation, today my big toe is 1/2 numb, i keep the bandage and boots loose enough so they don't cut the blood supply off! hope it improves later today.

See ortho in 2 weeks for a check up.

hope everyone is okay today.
