I am bringing this post back up since at this time of the year many of us fall more indepth into that pit of us against the world and it is important that we stay with the living, involve ourselves to the best of our abilities and limitations and strive to remain as healthy as possible. Mind and body! Helping others and realizing we are NOT alone and there are and always will be people far worse then each of us are helps put our pain in better perspective and give it less power over us.
We have at the moment a large number of under 30's and that is worrisome to see posts such as these. You may have decades yet of pain to endure and scores more of appointments, procedures, and tests and you cant get caught in a vortex of nothing else but your pain and its many facets and faces, you have to find balance in your life as a CPer and your life as a Mom,wife, family member, friend, coworker, etc. Pain can be all encompassing if you allow it to take over and run your entire being and as that happens you become less of the other things.
My pain and CP is a separate life,a different club,or compartment if you will and I and you all belong to this club that we dont want to be a member of but are,and my family does not,nor my coworkers, boss, kids,by the grace of God !! Hopefully not many in my immediate life will ever understand this life I live since that means they would also have to know the pain and that I dont or wouldnt ever want.
If you do not see a therapist who is current in PM please find one today, learn how to cope and stay active and alive within your scope of illness and disorders. Dont be too quick to shrug off distraction therapy, anymore then you would injections or hydrotherapy. We have many choices in this life and as well as many restrictions but no one can control our thinking any better then ourselves and our attitude about treatments, procedures, meds, and yes even the Drs we see plays a very important role in how well we travel this road.
Here is an awesome example and hoping he doesnt mind I use it. WB one of the Mods here and a long, long time CPer wanted to move closer to his family, another state away,as we age we need that closeness but he moved to a state that was practically non opiate and he knew that to some extent going in but yet he bought a new house, packed up his things, and off he went not knowing how or if he could find a DR to treat him but he had made up his mind he was getting closer to his Sister one way or another!
He drove back and forth a few months from one state to another as he saw one Dr after another in his now home state and not one had accepted to take him on and write his meds, not the University, not the hometown Drs,not one! Driving was dangerous in winter and not easy on him so he finally again went out of state and was offered a Pain pump trial and he took it with some reservation of course and the DR doing it had a policy that you had to be totally off all narcotics for weeks, months actually I think he was during the trial and into the waiting for the surgery,we worried about him,but he just kept saying it was Ok he would have relief sooner than later?
He made it and I for one am still in awe of the fact that he set his mind to something and that something was more important than his pain and his goal was getting to his family and then getting the best pain relief he could and it took steps and one by one he got there! This was a course of a year not months or weeks!!
He didnt allow his CP to ruin his plan or alter them in any way,he set out to do what was going to be the best for him personally in the long haul and he off he went with Susie and Char and many of us shaking our heads.
Thats what I am talking about, not letting your pain control you and your life but you controlling it,putting it into a compartment and dealing with it aside from your life as a whole, not letting the whole of you be your pain.
Now I know the backlash I am going to see here before I even hit submit but I can tell you before you say How when I cant do this or that or the pain is too much that it isnt!! It is only as powerful as you let it get! If you cant control that thinking it is bigger then you then get someone to show you how and that is where counselors, therapists, and P Docs are priceless!! We hire on Gps,Orthos,Neuros,Surgeons,Physcial therapists, even Chiro's and Gyn Drs and we know pain effects our minds as well as our bodys so why would you not have a Dr for that? Granted some are useless when it comes to CP but like anything else they have their specialty and their forte'.
