A shortage of rheumys is a HUGE problem. I was lucky and live in an area where there are quite a few, but needed to be referred to a research center. Now I drive 3hrs each way for my care, and I receive great treatment. I have a rheum who is both a peds/adult rheum which is perfect for me since my JRA has caused so much damage and is different from RA. I was told there were only 250 peds rheums in the country and that this facility has 4. Crazy!
There are some states that have only 2 rheumys and some of these have received no new training and are treating the same way as 10yrs ago. There are studies that show there are 2 rheumies for each 100,000 patients. How willing are you able to drive?
I'm sorry you are struggling. It's not fair to have a disease and no help to feel better.
