Anyone have severe wrist pain? I constantly have both wrists hurting and I can't even use them to push myself up off of a bed or out of a chair. I had some x rays done last week and they came back perfectly normal. I don't know why they can hurt this bad for 4 months and not show anything wrong with them.

Sounds like an arthritis flare.

Wouldn't that show up on an x ray?

Hi Brian,
Sorry about
the pain. I am also limited in how I can use my hands. Understand I am not a dr. I don't even play one on TV, but I need more info to even hazard a guess:
where in your hands? how do you describe the pain: achy, burning, tingly, pressure etc? constant/intermittent? have you injured your hands? do you do repetitive work? any neck/shoulder injury?
does pain increase decrease with activity? rest? have you found anything that relieves the pain even for a moment?

Hi Daesin
The pain is actually in my wrists. It hurts constantly and hurts even more when have my hands flat on a surface and try to use them to push myself up. Sometimes they actually collapse. I used to do construction work on water towers and then on garage doors, using my hands a lot. Sometimes when I grab things a certain way my hands actually cramp up and hurt. That's not my main concern though. This wrist issue is the bigger one since it constantly hurts so bad. It doesn't really increase or decrease with rest or types of work. Just constantly hurts. I have not found anything that relieves the pain. I was prescribed neurontin, but I only take it at night since it knocks me out.

Okay, so wrists....constant pain, weakness/cramps in hands at times. if they put you on Neurontin then its nerve? Nerve pain can be very hard to treat. I have nerve damage left side from neck to fingers. Its no fun.
What imaging/nerve testing have they done?
Have you tried hot packs/ice packs....2o mins hot, 20 cold and repeat.
Does compression make it better?

It does sound a lot like arthritis especially since you used your hands so much at work. I would go back to the primary care dr & make him aware of how bad this pain is. It does not sound like you got his attention to well. If he blows you off again ask him to refer you to a hand specialist
Take care.

I have the exact same pain in both wrists & it has invaded other joints now too. I have a type of inflammatory arthritis. Flares can last days, weeks, months, years.................. I am experimenting with various meds to attempt to control it without much luck so far. There are many types of inflammatory arthritis, perhaps check out the RA forum.
Arthritis does not show up on x-rays unless & until there is actual damage to the joint.
Mine does not show up. Its so painful at times it feels like it must surely light up the x-ray like a spot light.
I'd go to a rheumatologist. There are lots of good new treatments in this field.
Hope this helps.

Wondering if it is carpal tunnel syndrome? People that use their hands a lot get this. Could also be ganglion cysts, they don't always 'pop out' and don't always show up on x-rays either. Try to get the doctor to order an m.r.i. of both wrists.
multiple surgeries for rotator cuff both shoulders with residual chronic impingement syndrome, ulnar nerve transposition, carpal tunnel release, wrist ganglionectomies/denervectomies/tenolysis, multiple herniated discs, tarlov cyst, whiplash, bursitis of hips, tendonitis, torus, 3rd degree shoulder separation, torn labrum, ovarian cysts, fibroid tumors of the uterus

god bless honey I have the same problem with mine sometimes I cant even touch the steering wheel to drive my car. I also have ganglian cysts arthritis and a positive carpal tunnel emg test I use my forearms to push myself along the hallways going up the stairs I use braces sometimes and ace banages whatever I can find when I get desparate. my meds would knock down an elephant and I just cant get out from under the pain some days I had regular xrays in the beginning that showed nothing. Cleveland clinic looked at xrays once and said our equipment is ancient and the person reading them is not very knowledgeable. so if you don't get answers go somewhere else until you get an answer
I used to say my pain was an 8 or a 10. then I found out it can get worse. muscle spasms caused hypolordosis 2 failed rotator cuff surgeries OA DDD stenosis 2 slipped discs cervical and lumbar impingment extrusion/protrusion endplate edema hypertrophic flavum annular tears vasculitus ,cyroglobulinemea and all the * that comes with it raynauds etc carpal tunnel both hands

Daesin- I saw a rhuematologist regarding pain in different areas of my body. I said the most constant and bothersome pain is the wrist pain. She then diagnosed me with Chronic Pain Syndrome. I was put on Cymbalta and referred to a pain clinic. The pain clinic sent me down to do x rays. (also put me on neurontin)
I just emailed my pain doctor and they said go back to the rhuematologist and test for a "low suspicion of a inflammatory disorder"
