No test I know of, and you probably have to figure out the diagnosis yourself, because doctors aren't likely to tell you you have this. I've got it from breaking my neck at C3.

I don't know anything about brain changes, but I do know the messages to my brain get mixed up at my point of injury. It's pretty obvious what's going on. My nerves test just fine in my extremities, but I have pain like crazy. The worst is the freezing sensation in my lower legs and feet when I step on a tile floor barefoot. I have to wear long pants in summer and socks to bed.
It doesn't come on immediately after a spine injury. Mine took quite a few months to hit me, even after I got out of a nursing home (awful experience).
PS: If you find anything that helps with the pain, even a little, post it! As far as I know there is NO relief, let alone a cure.
