Well, hi there. First, let me say that I am "an ex-problem drinker" as the Big Book says. Second, I have been faced with having had 8 surgeries in my first 10 years of sobriety and several more in the last 11 years. I walk the same path, in other words.
Now, let me get this straight...you say you're working a good program. Of course the program is a good one. How well you're 'working it' is debatable. You speak of yourself and your doctor, but say nothing about your sponsor.
How did you get off narcotics the first time around? I get it...no one wants to go through the pain of withdrawl and it can be dangerous if not handled properly. I'm not familiar with the medication you mention but it may be that the doctor is attempting to block the 'high' while still providing pain relief.
Know that you are not alone, walking the tight rope of recovery/pain. Together, 'we' can do what we could not do alone. Personally, I question an 'earth persons' ability to claim 'expert' or 'specialist' unless they are one of 'us'. lol
