For those of you who live in chronic pain my heart goes out to you. I know what its like to wake up at 2am hurting so bad you have to get up and either take meds or use a heating or ice pack. I have degenerative disc disease. I have had fusion surgery. I was hoping having the fusion would give me relief yet it was just not meant to be.

Both my shoulder blades hurt and ache every day. It a broad achy type pain across the upper one third of my back. The greatest pain is over both shoulder blades. I was wondering if anyone here has this problem? Also my hip joints are hurting more each day along with my fingers and toes to a lesser degree. I have been tested for RA and OA both. RA is negative but OA is positive. I don't have horrible OA yet the meds generally given for it don't help. After surgery I became a full time pain management patient. I take opiates, muscle relaxers and Gabapentin each day. I do get some relief yet my meds only keep me comfortable about 12 hours each day. Because of the opiate crisis drs are reluctant to give out adequate pain meds. All of us talk about this problem in the waiting room each month.

Lastly I have a problem with sitting down for longer than thirty minutes at a time. I have to get up and move due to being stiff and painful. I also get cold really easily. After sitting I have to get up and walk. This usually restores my body to a comfortable temp and then I sit down for thirty minutes or maybe an hour and have to do the same thing over again. I have been to plenty of drs and been given thyroid tests and a few other things. Nothing ever shows up. In the meantime I am just dealing with all this. I am in my mid sixties and honestly am not looking to my seventies.

Thanks for reading and any help would be appreciated.

OF, I have the pain across the shoulders, but the worst of it is the feeling of a tennis ball underneath both shoulder blades. When it does this I have a lot of buring pain. What helps me is a massage to the area. I have an electric one & my husband will use it on the areas. It hurts like crazy at first, but once the muscle starts releasing it gets much better. If you have been on the same muscle relaxer for a while perhaps it's time for a different one.

For athritis sufferers there is a topical gel available OTC now. Look up Voltaren gel, it should be used exactly as directed & it takes a week to be fully effective. I used it when it was only available by prescipton only so I was thrilled when it went OTC. The ingredients did not change either.

Take care.

I agree with Susie voltaren gel is helpful, pain patches too. I also have the pain you suggest. Message is very helpful and lots of Heat packs very nice . A nice hot bath or shower helps to relax the areas .

Have you tried tens machine which has also helped. There is a new battery operated tens out with no wires to deal with. I haven’t tried that new type yet but worth a try.

Sometimes the tissue between the rib and shoulder blade bone becomes inflamed and antibiotics really help clear it up. Thats when the shoulder blade pain can restrict breathing .

I have a brace to hold shoulder blades still in correct position that is the Best option for me. After a couple of days it’s as good as new. Caution not to wear brace more than a few days at a time . That seems to be the best treatment in my case. I just try and remember not to push pull or strain area seems to help. Becoming mindful of movements also has helped. Letting leverage do the job in some cases mostly daily chores, rather than lifting pushing or pulling. Sometimes just lifting a gallon of milk can set it off. During that time I purchase half gallons. In most cases it’s adjusting to and knowing my limitations while working with it not against it.

Some days it’s just a matter of waiting it out and pain meds do offer relief but the side effects is a vicious circle for me.

Sending healing blessings your way.

I want to thank both Susie and Chotti for their insights into pain control. I have been on Voltaren for about a year. I liberally use it on my shoulder blades yet get no relief from it. I put it on my hands and feet and do get some relief this way.

Susie do you have any idea what causes the tennis ball sensation you are feeling? I don't have that type of pain. I feel like I ache so much across this area. I almost feel like someone has thrown a wet heavy wool blanket across my upper back. The pain will get so bad at times I will start shaking. At this time I reach for the opiates. I used to use flexeril but changed to Tizanadine for muscle relaxants. I get about equal pain relief from both.

I have a tens unit but again no help for me.

I just never thought I would feel this way at retirement age. I was just not prepared for this much pain plus being in pain makes us anxious and depressed. I am going back to the dr next week hoping to get some new things to try or maybe changing up my meds. My surgeon wants to fuse more levels but I am not so sure it would help. I believe I have more pain since my fusion than I had before surgery. Surgeons love to cut.

As I look at your signature Chotti I want to say how sorry I am you are going through so much. I am thankful I have good caring drs to help me. Thank you Susie for your help also.

Bless you all.

OF, yes I do know what causes the tennis ball feeling under my shoulder blades, severe muscle spasms. I take a muscle relaxer 3 times a day, however, just recently my dr added a 2nd one when things really go off the rails. In the past I could keep it under good control with a massage therapist. Another option that helped was ablation of the nerve endings by radio frequency. It's a temporary fix but I got good relief with that procedure. My current PM does not do this procedure. Having my husband use the hand held massager on me helps too.

Take care.

Miss Susie,
Thank you again for taking the time to respond. I have often thought about all my younger care free years and wish now I had taken more vacations and traveled to the places I wanted to visit while I was able. I tell all who will listen to never put off having fun. I know we all must work each day and we have other obligations to worry about also. I had the type of job where my boss never wanted me to take a vacation. He would actually pay me two extra weeks per year to NOT take time off. I always felt I needed the money as who knows how many rainy days we may face latter in life.

I hope you feel better. I am sorry your muscle spasms are getting worse. I had the worst week last week in quite a while. More pain than usual. I also woke sick with a sore throat. I had a fever of 101 and thought for sure I had covid. I was tested which thankfully came back negative. I slept for two days straight and would have bet money I had covid. Where I live the numbers for covid are extremely high. I am sick to death of dealing with this horrible disease. I am heartbroken at the number of deaths and those suffering.

Bless everyone and my prayers are with you all.

Testing negative does not mean you do not have covid. Unfortunately, these tests are not 100% accurate.

I hope you feel better soon.

Keep strong. I stretch, it helps some.
shoulder blades could be neck or tendons. I live with CT in shoulders and osteophytes in neck,
and yes, i hear ya. Windmill stretches, shoulder rotations, as well.
water therapy, i do walking laps with specific exercises to help. HT
To you all, keep strong. HT.

HT, I love your signature....sometimes I am me, sometimes I am still me. Great saying. I can see you have neck issues also. Since surgery I have morphed into a totally different person. I take my pain meds as soon as I get up and I do ok for about six hours. I get so much pain in my shoulder blades and across my back it makes me shake or tremble. I also always feel as if I am cold all the time. Needless to say I hate winter.

Say hi to everyone in Australia. lol

Oceanfisher- your post stuck out to me as I read it. I too suffered in the same area for years and did so much research, took so many meds and saw multiple doctors without much success.
Finally, on a hunch, I got a neck harness they sell on Amazon that has the pulley system and water bag that you fill to the desired weight you feel you can handle. I started out at 15 lbs and after a couple of days went to 20. The effect was amazing. After just a few days, the large majority of my pain was gone and I just have to take an NSAID occasionally.
I urge you to give it a try as the cost is minimal and it might help you considerably.
Best of luck.
