I had c5-7 disc replacement and fusion surgery. Two weeks after surgery, I came down with a terrible cold. Coughed for days. I am finally over the cold but appetite still isn’t good from surgery and I am tired. I don’t sleep during the day. Had my first post op appointment and my doctor said everything is healing but I find by 4 in the afternoon I am wiped out. I wear the collar to sleep still. I go back in a few weeks, but concerned about the fatigue and appetite. I still have bilateral arm pain as well.

This is not uncommon at all this soon after surgery. It takes months to heal from this surgery. The fatigue is often associated with anesthesia, not to mention the trauma your body went through from the actual surgery. Time & patience should be your new friend. Be sure to go outside & get fresh air every day. Do activities that your dr allows, doing too much can cause a step backwards.

Be sure to get protein in your diet, try some Ensure or drinks along that line, no energy drinks. Instead of 3 meals a day, try 6 small meals until your appetite returns.

Keep us posted.

Thanks so much for the reply. I am 5.5 post surgery. I think I tend to overdo. I am going to try the drinks and smaller meals and hopefully that will help. I may start naps in the afternoon if I feel tired. I will let my doctor know if it is not better. I thought with taking vitamin D, C, and multi I would have more pep. I think the cold set me back for sure. It last easily two weeks and I was not taking my Gabapentin or pain meds. I will welcome patience and time as my new friend and let you know. Thanks again! ♥️

Took me forever to heal from neck fusion. I was tired for months after surgery. Susie is right in that this surgery makes you tired and it just takes time. Plan on three months depending on your age.

Good luck

Thanks so much! Yes I am 10 weeks this week from my surgery. I still experience some arm pain and neck pain. I find when I overdue, then I am done. I went grocery shopping yesterday, cleaned and made dinner. Sleeping by 7 and exhausted. Some days are better than others but I need to learn patience with this. Then I fell on the ice a few weeks back and badly sprained my elbow. I was more worried about what I could have done to my neck. I am in my 50's so I am sure it will take some time to get back to normal. I am not taking pain meds as often. Only here and there so that is good, too. Glad to know the tiredness is expected. How are you doing now?

Good to read you are using less meds as you heal. Falling on the ice could have been horrible for your fusion. Hope all is well now.

I have adjusted to the fact I have chronic pain. I am in pain management for the simple reason my fusion ended up causing me more pain through the years. Also the surgeon said I need two more levels fused. I take opiates and try to live my life with as little pain as possible. The aging process has just caught up with me now. Degenerative disc disease along with osteoporosis has caused me much pain and distress. I have broken my pelvis and vertebrae from falls.

Let us know how you are doing. Best of luck to you
