I have several conditions that cause me to live a life of Chronic Pain.

I know many can relate! I have just started a full pain "program" with clinics, PT, and doctors help to try to live as pain free a life as possible.

Here is my question. I have been on pain meds (Hydrocodone 10/325) for three years and because over the years my body has built its tolerance, I now take 2 every 4 hours.

(10 a day). At my doctor apt. @ the pain clinic, he said that that is too many pills to take, and wants to switch me to something that is longer lasting, that I can take once or twice a day instead. I am in FULL agreement with this, as I think a switch is needed now & I am tired of taking so many pills. I don't know alot about pain meds & could use some help.

His suggestions for the switch were :

Avinza, MS Contin, or Oxycontin.

I have an apt. early next week and want to make the right choice, since i can't just say

"I'll try them all & see what works"

I would really appriciate your advice/experience as to what works best & lasts longest.

Thank you!

Dear want2feelbetter, In the past I had taken oxycontin and it really worked well for my pain but I was allergic and broke out it hives and after only 1month I had terrible withdrawl symptoms. I did take MScontin as well did not work as well for me. We are all different and you really wont know until you try. I dont know whtat the other one is, however i was just started on Kadian (also a time release morphine.) not doing so great with relief yet but Dr says we will titrate the dose until I get adequate relief. Good luck Toni

Gramps is right. Ask the dr out of the three he gave which one is he having the most success with. We all react so differently to medications its really impossible to tell which is the best. You really do need to be on a long acting medication. Let us know what you and the dr decide upon. Susie

I know every body is so different in what works, but I know there are some that just work better than others & I was wondering what works for others & if it truly lasts. I have no clue where to start & just wanted to know where you have had success?? If you get a minute, I would love to hear what has worked for you. THANKS!!

Hi Want2,

I've been on Kadian for over a year now and it works great for me.  I believe it is like MS Contin (morphine).  I was a little tired in the beginning, but got used to it quick.  Best of luck to you!

I can tell you that the Avinza did not work well for me. I had the worst side effects you could ever imagen. I looked as ill as I felt! It made me feel like I had the flu 24/7. I was vomiting all the time , it was awful!

Now the oxy was way , way different. I've been on it for over 2yrs and no major side effects. At first it last the 11 to 12 hrs, after you've taken it awhile it seems to wear off quicker 7 to 8 hrs. Thats maybe when you'll need an increase.

Hope this helps!

J rene
