Hello all,
I'm reading the Maker's Diet book as I have heard good things about it. I have mild to moderate Crohn's and so I think it might be a good route for me to go before things get worse. I've really appreciated reading about people's success with the diet on this forum. I've also read some of the criticisms of the book as well here, which have been helpful as well.
So, after reading the first 100 or so pages, I have a couple of questions for folks who follow this plan
-do you take the "black powder" which Rubin named "HSOs or Homeostatic Soil Organisms"? (p. 28)
-is the "black powder" necessary to successfully follow the diet?
-do you purchase the HSOs from Rubin's store, Garden of Life, which he started after he was "forced to find a way to distribute the HSOs that had helped me get well." (p.28)
-do you follow Rubins "clenzology" program and use the products from his website for that?
-have you had success with the diet without the clenzology program and products?
Basically, I'm going to try the eating part either way...but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to spend the extra $$ to buy his products, especially if the diet is successful without them. I'm just a little skeptical that the products are neccesary to improve my health. I'd appreciate thoughts from anyone who has tried any variation of the diet.

i've been doing the maker's diet since august 2006 and i have had outstanding results with it.

HSO's - these are found in his probiotic, primal defense and primal defense ultra. the difference between the 2 is that the ultra contains one more strain of probiotic not found in the original formula. his green food blend, perfect food, also contains HSO's as it contains probiotics. he's a big believer in HSO's and gives them a lot of credit to his turn around. from my own personal experience, i give more credit to the diet. i am sure probiotics are helping, but i have tried 2 other kinds and i cannot tell any difference between these and primal defense in regards to a clinical response. i dont believe you need to take his probiotic brand if you are on the diet, but i think you should be taking something as you have a digestive disorder. i highly recommend taking a probiotic if you are to start the makers diet as the bad bacteria in your gut will die off cos you will be starving them from lack of sugars and grains. this is the key time to be using a probiotic to reseed your gut. if i remember correctly (please check this or some one else, if you know please help me here) the regiment for introducing primal defense into your system is to start at 3 pills 3 times per day. taken between meals and on an empty stomach of course (1/2 hour before a meal, or 2 hours after). then increase 1 pill per day until you get to a total of 12 (4 pills 3xday). stay on this for like 3 months then reduce to a maintenance level of like 2-4 per day. something like that.

i do have his clenzology stuff, but i have yet to try it. i have heard very very good stuff about it, but then these people work for jordan who praised it. but also they did so of their own free will and use it religiously and firmly believe in the benefits of it. i believe them to be genuine in sharing their experience with me.

there are a lot of good products out there. you do not need to feel that you must use his stuff to get better or be well or healthy. but know this: his whole reason behind making the supplement company was to make products he wanted to use. he uses them all the time (yes, as owner and CEO he gets them for free). he has very high standards in regards to ingredients and manufacturing. from my research and trying other products, i do believe them to be some of the best stuff out there. but like i said, other products are excellent too, you just need to find out which ones.

i do recommend taking a probiotic (especially at first), digestive enzymes (very handy when eating something non-organic or off the diet), and cod liver oil. carlson labs makes great supplements so you may want to check them out (jordan actually recommended this company to me and dr. mercola recommends their products as well). a green earth food/algae product i think is also a good idea to include in your diet. there are a lot of those on the market.

i believe if you firmly stick to the diet, to a "T" initially through the first 40 days as recommended by the book, you'll see some results (i cant tell you to what degree though as we are all inherently different). i saw results in like 3 days. it was amazing. i've actually just started doing it again from phase 1. i am one week in. i plan on doing it yearly in january as a way to start off the new year, prime my gut, and detox my body from all the little cheats i do here and there throughout the year. phase 3 is maintenance phase for the rest of your life. jordan told me that if i ever start feeling ill or symptomatic, to go to phase 2. if it is really bad, go to phase 1 and stay there until symptoms subside. but if you do have symptoms you should also see your doctor.

i hope this helps.

Hi up, and welcome! We (family of 4) have been doing the diet since September. To be honest, we do not use the Primal Defense with HSOs. The only product I have from Rubin's company are his digestive enzymes. I've used another brand of digestive enzymes for many years--maybe 10 or 12--and decided to give his a try. They seem very good, but I'm not sure I think they're any better than the brand I've always used. We use a probiotic called Theralac which you can read about by adding .com after the name. (As CrazyHarry said, there are many good brands out there.) I may try Rubin's probiotic with HSOs in the future if we decide it's necessary.

My son does not do clenzology according to Rubin's instructions, but he does use a Neti pot religiously every night before bed (sinus irrigation). I believe the principle is similar to Jordan's plan. Anyone with sinus issues or frequent colds/sore throats can really, really benefit from it!!! We've been using it for about a year now with incredible results. My daughter uses it a little less frequently but has managed to keep from getting any sinus infections thus far this winter. I attribute it to the Neti pot and frequent use of our juicer!

Green drinks can be found at any health food store, and they're amazing.

So jmho, I don't believe Rubin's products are crucial for success, but I do believe that EVERYONE can benefit from probiotics and digestive enzymes.

Good luck to you!!!
